This was a brilliant film. Totally fantastic. I cannot fault anything about it except.... that whilst the first half of the movie was action packed, funny, and sexy, the second half seemed to loose some of this excitement. It carried on being very good but I was much more on the ball with the first half. I cannot actually believe this was based on a true story. How amazing that they got so far and no one was any the wiser!

DVD : The World's Fastest Indian [2005]
The true story of Burt Monro, a man who travels to America from New Zealand to attempt to break the fastest speed record on his 1920's Indian motorcycle.

What can you say about Anthony Hopkins? The man is simply indescribable. If you have ever seen Silence of the Lambs, you wouldn't believe it was the same actor starring as Burt Monro in this 2005 picture. Hopkins captures the essence of a man who changed the speeding of all motorcycles in the 60's. Hopkins swift and charming elegance is exquisite in capturing Monro's personality and to this day, I am still baffled as to why Hopkins wasn't at least Oscar nominated performance.

Though Hopkins is exceptional in the central role, the star of this picture is Monro. This ... Read More:

This movie makes you relax, makes you want to travel, to have fun. It is one of the best movies i have ever seen. Drinks, women, friendship, drama, it has everything. I recommend you watch it right before you go on a trip, preferably to the seaside, it can be a great "guidebook" for parties. When i have a good time, i can't help it and i think about "Cocktail", the one word that can best describe what you feel when you see the movie, and after that when you think about it is "If you want it, life can be fun" ; OK, maybe there are more words. I bet that after you see it you'll want to go with your friends, walk on the beach, drink something, in short, have a memorable night.

Thirteen Days tells the story of the two weeks when the world came closest to Mutually Assured Destruction in the autumn of 1962 when the Soviet Union established missiles in Cuba. As historical films go this is one of the more thoughtful. Kennedy is presented in a sympathetic light placating the 'hawks' in the military who were determined to bomb the Russian missile sites and invade Cuba, as well as rising to Khruschev's test of will. In essence this was the purpose of Khruschev's strategy to test the young American President who had undermined his authority with the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Like most historical films accuracy is an issue and once you get past the dodgy Boston Irish-American accents, then it is possible to enjoy this political, military and diplomatic ... Read More:

I've never been huge fan of disaster films, as I've always found them to be over the top, or just an excuse for some special effects. Nevertheless I decided to give the pre-millennium Dante's Peak a chance and all things considered I'm pretty glad I did as I really enjoyed the film.

Set in Dante's Peak (hence the title I guess) the film tells of a major volcano located in the heart of the town, that's about to blow it top. Despite the increasingly alarming warning signs, the idea of evacuation is considered premature and brushed aside, despite the best efforts of Pierce Brosnan (who plays the volcano expert) to convince them otherwise. There are some really spectacular special effects, but all have been done in such a way that really enhances the film itself. I couldn't ... Read More:

This movie is well written, action packed with a bit of light hearted comedy to keep it from getting too heavy. This movie carries on with the tradition of Lock Stock, and a welcome return after the last few attempts. A couple of dodgy accents, but that's a very small issue. The film is in 2 parts, the first the robbery then as soon as that's done, then the action really kicks in. This film was digitally shot, and that makes it excellent on HD with superb picture and sound.

This film is a good mystery of an accidental death involving the Secretary of Defense that is swept under the rug and has a fine pairing of Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman. Sean Young, whose Susan Atwell is the mistress of jealous and controlling David Brice, finds herself falling for Costner's Lt. Commander Farrell and hopes for a way out of her affair with Brice but doesn't quite summon the resolve to break it off with him until he violently confronts her about spending a weekend with another man and demands to know that man's identity. Brice's Doberman-on-a-leash, Scott Pritchard, takes over at this point by orchestrating the cover-up, contaminating the crime scene, tampering with evidence to absolve Brice of any blame, and to implicate a phantom Russian mole in the young woman's accident. It would appear that this film has attracted a lot more controversy than it is worth. Spy movies are a favorite of mine and I found this one typical of the genre. The spy game is based on trust, deception and ultimately betrayal and this offering certainly didn`t disappoint in that respect. It was, perhaps for some, a touch slow in parts but that only gave the viewer time to catch up. Definitely a film to watch more than once so you can unravel the plot with hindsight.

DVD : The Bounty [1984]
How could a film with Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day Lewis and Liam Neeson sink without trace? That was the fate of Roger Donaldson's 'The Bounty' back in 1984 when none of them were exactly box-office certainties. Indeed, the third dramatization of the British Navy's most infamous act of piracy (excluding the semi-documentary 'In the Wake of the Bounty') and is perhaps best remembered today as the flop that David Lean nearly directed before falling out with Dino De Laurentiis (UA studio boss Steven Bach infamously greenlit 'Heaven's Gate' instead of a Lean version!). It certainly deserves to be better remembered, boasting a superb screenplay by Robert Bolt (originally intended as two films: the second, dealing with the aftermath was quietly dropped after this tanked) that owes a lot more to history than ... il give this box set five stars purely for the first two installments of the species quadrilogy but the third and fourth despite carrying on from where the first two left off seem to be mediocre in comparison to those that made natasha henstridge a star in the making.
