Although Ken Stott is a good if sanitized Rebus, the show doesn't really take off. Format might be an issue here as 70 minutes is a fairly short period to tell a complex story. On the other hand, other shows like Blue Murder manage it. My main misgivings about the show are that the episodes have nothing to do whatsoever with the books of the same titles and that the story telling is linear. A whodunnit is which the who and usually even the why is obvious after 15 minutes is pretty pointless. There are absolutely no surprises, no twists in the story telling: not to put too fine a point on it, the stories are plainly boring. That's a pity because you get some really find performances of the cast. Particularly the actresses who play Siobhan Clarke ... Read More:

DVD : Two Thousand Acres Of Sky - Complete - Series One To Three

I've watched this over a period of the past week - the full 22 hours. The weather outside was cold and grumpy, but seeing these three series again was absolutely FANTASTIC. Every one of the characters has their own individuality and Alfie - WOW what a fantastic little actor. His relationship with Kenny (Paul Kaye) was an uplifting experience to watch and at times SO funny. Michelle Collins as Abby, was very, very good. And as for Paul Kaye - well, what can I say!! such a natural, with a very individual and often incredibly sensible outlook on life. The scenery was wonderful, no swearing or violence. An absolutely FANTASTIC series, so enjoyable and truly inspirational. Wish there could be more programmes around to watch like this. So after 22 hours, ... Read More:

The show is top-notch! However, some information about this DVD release is missing or wrong on Amazon. It is not 500 minutes as it says here, but rather 270 minutes. Also, the original was filmed in 16:9, but for some reason this DVD has been released in 4:3. Which means that you get a lot of people almost off screen and half faces most of the time. A wee bit annoying. There is a Season 1 + 2 release, which should be in 16:9.

Lovely, gentle and quiet, but still a definite cut above the usual Sunday evening fare.. originally seeming to be the Beeb's replacement for 'Ballykissangel', this actually was turned around by the idiot-savant Taoist musings of Paul Kaye's wonderful Kenny into something special. Just as Northern Exposure jumped the shark when Joel left, the series was just marking time after his (very poignant) death scene.

'The Broker's Man' never really took off despite coming from the same stable as 'Midsomer Murders' and 'Ultimate Force' and yet is quite an effective and satisfying drama.
Kevin Whateley excels playing a more edgy and complicated character than he was allowed in 'Inspector Morse' and the set up provides some original drama.
It combines aspects of the detective genre and more human interest stories as Kevin's character of Jimmy Griffen verifies insurance claims and deals with problems in his own family life.
Not as cosy as Morse or as action packed as 'Ultimate Force' but this series has plenty of drama and excitement and is well worth owning or renting.

I really like this series so I bought all three. I saw this series on the public broadcasting system in the U.S. I found it really touching. Very enjoyable. I even bought a code-free DVD player so I could watch the zone-2 DVDs. (U.S. uses zone-1 DVDs).
