I have a confession to make: I didn't really enjoy Pretty Woman that much, and Four Weddings and a Funeral (not to mention Mickey Blue Eyes, Two Weeks Notice and About a Boy) didn't really do it for me.

However, in Notting Hill, as far as I am concerned, everything comes together for Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, delivering a landmark in the gentle countryside of romantic comedy.

This is not the only time that Julia Roberts plays a version of herself -- she knowingly sends herself up in Ocean's Twelve. And this is not the only time Hugh Grant has played this particular character -- heck, it's the good-natured but over-witty English fopp he always plays. But the pairing of these two well-honed characters is exactly ... Read More:

Persuasion is my favourite book and this adaptation does it justice. The tone of the film matches the tone of the book: whistful. Anne is beautifully portrayed by Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds is wonderful as the charismatic Captain Wentworth. It's far subtler than the more recent ITV adaptation, and because of that all the more beautiful. Scenes in this film would melt the hardest of hearts, yet it is still funny. The perfect comfort film.

If you are interested by the plot synopsis read the book instead (Enduring Love). It has much more depth which cannot be shown on film. The actors' try their best (Bill Nighy, as ever, is great in a sadly quite minor role) but it's not the easiest book to make into a film and, while I'm not usually one for writing negative reviews, I wish they hadn't bothered.

This film is amazing. The acting is superb and story very moving. It manages to be happy, sad, funny and uplifting all at once. The 'disturbing' moments work and are integral to the story. I choose to look at it as rather than him being a dirty old man, he's just the same man he always was, a womaniser, in an old body. Wonderful, a must see.

Film about the recriminations that take place between an insurance salesman (played by Samuel L. Jackson) and a high-flying attorney (played by Ben Affleck) following a car accident involving the two of them that manages to royally screw up both of their lives. A good study of the consequences of selfishness and the folly of unchecked anger. Definitely worth a look.

3 fantastic British films, showing that us Brits still know what we're doing when it comes to films (even if we do need a little American help with money, stars etc).
Hugh Grant actually shows in Bridget Jones' Diary that he can play different characters. The delicious Colin Firth stars in 2 of the three films.
Ok, so these are Chick Flicks, but what's wrong with that. Get some mates around, buy a couple of bottles of Lambrini and get watching. Ideal girl's night in films.
ENJOY!
