Picture this: Circa 1975, A class of 32 bored, inner city school, O level English kids, dragged off to an arts cinema to see a showing of Polanski's Macbeth. We settled down for a boring couple of hours messing about and talking. Five minutes into the film, you could have heard a pin drop. We were hooked.
We went from complete disinterest, to shakespeare fans in one afternoon. I will always be grateful to that young english teacher (whatever her name was?) for igniting a lifelong interest in literature. If our Headmaster/parents had known what we were going to see, I'm sure the trip would never have happened! But the quality of acting was such, that suddenly we all knew and understood olde worlde english, something which carried on through other ... Read More:

I started watching the film knowing no more than it was about the holocaust it's a graphic film, that had me literally open mouthed, and a few of the scenes had me crying. As the film went on towards the end I started to feel the plot was a little far fetched and i got quite angry, thinking it was ruining a film wreaked with sadness about the most tragic event of the 20th century. However it wasn't til it finished, jsut before the final credits rolled that i realised that this story of Wladyslaw Spzilman was in fact true life. I was so shocked and absolutely amazed at this extraordinary tale. It really shuns your life into perspective. I don't know if this was the desired effect but the ending made me feel sad for the Nazi soldier.

When this film first came out I watched it, having been a fan of the book. It's been many years now, and I decided to buy it on DVD as I was inspired by the new BBC version.

Polanski has shot a truly beautiful version of Tess of The D'Urbervilles. Nastassia Kinski is stunning and so innocent as Tess. Angel is played by a very young Peter Firth (Harry in Spooks), and both portrayals are sensitive and believeable. The way it is shot shows Polanski's talent for cinematography and some scenes just take your breath away.

I do feel this film suffers because of it's length. The end comes too quickly and seems to be rushed. There's no doubt that this film is beautiful and haunting, but it is not emotional enough to make me cry.

This recent adaptation of Dickens' Oliver Twist is just one more in a long, long series, would you say. And you would be wrong. But what can it bring that could be new on a subject we all know since this book and this story are classics that everyone knows and that are even at times kind of over-repeated. Roman Polanski decides to renew the treatment of the theme by using the fact that we know all major events and episodes by going as fast as possible on the core of the episodes and insisting on what is around, before or after. If the episode is hard, like Nancy's death, he uses an ellipse that shortens it. If the episode is over-known, like the begging for more porridge, he centers the scene on the drawing of who is going to volunteer, and then on what comes before and follows. ... Read More:

This beautifully shot, stylish Roman Polanski comedy horror, manages to get the balance just right between scares and laughs. Every horror cliche is explored and lampooned, but its all done with such great respect for the genre it is spoofing, that it could easily be classed as a horror film in its own right.
The main joke here is that two intrepid vampire killers, are in fact a couple of bumblimg fools, completely outwitted by the devious, clever vampires they are supposedly hunting. Its a very good joke, and Roman Polanski and Jack Magowran are both excellent as our hapless heroes.
An excellent film that is lovely to look at, and a classic of its kind

Take a fantastic novel with two, related, intertwining plot lines. Decide that, to make your film, you need to get rid of one of them and jettison the more interesting one. End up with yet another devil-in-human-form film, and call it "The Ninth Gate"....

Arturo Perez Reverte is a remarkably talented novelist, and "The Dumas Club" is one of his finest tales, which in itself is utterly gripping. Unfortunately, treated like this by Polanski, it just doesn't work for me as a film. It's very frustrating to see what could have been a highly original treatment by a very fine film-maker turned into a relatively banal piece.

The message is very clear - if you enjoyed the novel you would be well advised to keep clear of the film.

'Rosemary's Baby' is without doubt Roman Polanski's best movie.
Still after fourty years this film scares me. Not in the kind of gruesome (torture-porn) kind of way that the Saw franchise do, but in a deeply psychological way, in the spirit of all the great twentieth century horror films. Rosemary (Mia Farrow) is the young married woman who's just moving into an upstate New York appartment block with her husband, actor Guy (John Cassavetes). The pair soon get to know their neighbours (mainly) Minnie Castevet & her husband Roman Castevet (Sidney Blackmer).
Rosemary's baby is a very scary film, not gruesome (sometimes mildly explicit) but it has that claustrophobic eery feeling & after the first half of the film the feeling that no one can be trusted & that the world is conspring against ... Read More:
