Having bought this from Amazon in March, I have only just got round to watching the final episode, and all I can say is - brilliant! I won't go into detail as some of the other reviwers have said some of what I would like to say, top notch cast and performances and brilliant period detail. I would just like to add that I enjoyed Series 4 as much as the first 3 series, I state that as one or two reviews say it isn't as good, but we must agree to differ. I came into this series as a totally new experience and I feel myself lucky that I did, as it it one of the most enjoyable dramas I have seen.

I enjoy all catherine cookson's films so i thought till i watched this one. This must be one of the early films that was made it showed. It seemed to me the set was cardboard walls that moved when ever they moved from one room to the other. No dishy actors to look at and very poor acting I'll not be in a rush to watch this film again in a hurry.

James Bolam shines in this series and is brilliantly supported by an excellent cast list.
I look forward to the rest of the series (when I can afford it).

DVD : The Mallen Saga
Catherine Cookson is unfairly dismissed as a purveyor of cheap historical romances, when really she's a damned good storyteller with some very interesting points to make about the class structure and women's role in society in the not-too-distant past. And, both in print and on screen, this trilogy is her finest work. Yes, this adaptation is slightly dated now (although not as much as you'd think), and it completely ignores the final novel of the trilogy to give us a completely different ending (indeed, after a fairly faithful adaptation of The Mallen Streak, the second series is only very loosely based on book two, The Mallen Girl). But on the positive side, the acting is first-class, with Caroline Blakiston especially giving the performance of her life ... Read More:

I grew up with the Campion programmes and so have lots of fond memories of watching them with my family over the years.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series, it followed the adventures of Albert Campion a sort of "freelance gentleman detective" and his manservant Lugg who joined his employ after serving at His Majesties pleasure for a number of years.

Together they travel around East Anglia and London solving a series of baffling crimes ranging from gang murders to supernatural mysteries. Corney it may sound, but some of the stories are genuinely unnerving, such as the ghost story of "Look to the Lady" and all are rivetting.

Peter Davidson is perfectly cast in his role of the charming and witty hero, with Julian Glover ... Read More:

Campion's very good indeed. I'm a little upset it's only available on Region 1. Also, I'd like to point out: his name is Peter Davison, not Davidson. This is a pretty large oversight for a DVD; I hope it gets corrected when it's released over here.

DVD : When The Boat Comes In - The Complete Series 1 [1976]
A heart warming and emotive view of post First World War Tyneside. Showing the heartache, poverty and deprivation but the strong and proud spirit of the people of the region and no doubt heavy industrial communities nationwide, that sadly no longer exist. However it's not all doom and gloom and there's merriment as well. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this BBC drama, that at one time attracted millions to the telly to watch yet for some strange reason was never repeated. I would recommend this to everyone, a classic. I can't wait for the full series to be released as it's not taken me long to watch all six videos in fact I've had to ration myself otherwise I'll have a long wait. James Bolam, Susan Jameson and the rest of the cast are excellent can't get enough!!
