Lester Burnham's (Spacey) life is reawaken when he meets Angela Hayes (Suvari).

This 1999 Oscar winning picture is regarded as Mendes' finest and with a fine realistic styled direction it is easy to see why.

Dramas can often be ruined when a can of clichés is opened but Mendes keeps a grounded direction all the way through and uses a variety of techniques to achieve the ultimate shocking effect. From a simple but effective sweeping shot of the suburban residency to the artistic and now infamous fantasy sequences, Mendes maintains the realism in the film's context.

Alan Ball's Oscar winning script is superb. The conciseness of the character's lives is easy and relaxing to watch which, given the complexity ... Read More:

My header says it all, I knew it was going to be good, I mean how could it not be? Tom hanks, Paul Newman.....Jude Law? Without giving too much away, Hanks plays a hit man for the mob lead by Newman, whom is also a father figure to Hanks, favouring him over his own son played by Daniel Craig...

The plot thickens when things turn sour due to the immature and irresponsible actions of Craig which have catastrophic consequences for all involved, especially when the terrifyingly deadly skills of Hanks comes to the fore.

The film however is not all violence, and in fact is truly a heart warming stroy of father and son bonding between Hanks and his son, finding themselves thrust into a situation which neither want, they decide to ... Read More:

Jarhead starts out in boot camp with new recruits and a sadistic drill instructor - and you think you know what is coming next. Bonding, heroism and death in the heat of battle. But that is not how Jarhead goes.

Instead what we get is a realistic(ish) view of the experience a youg marine in the period leading up to and including the first gulf war. We see young men driven half crazy with boredom and frustration as they wait for the war to start. It is an unjudgemental film that is uncomfortable viewing at times.

I lags a bit a points - difficult to make boredom interesting - and while I haven't read the autobiography this is based on it is clear some events have have been changed to increase the drama.

Excellent film , altho its a bit like Full Metal Jacket in places , especially the training bit. Lots of shouting and macho bonding but the actors are good and seem to fit thier roles. Ok so its a bit predicable but well worth a look , HD looks nice but not really essential to enjoy the flick.

Well worth renting out!

Never written a review on here before but wanted to for this because it made such a great present for my boyfriend. Really good, varied collection of films and the cover's made of metal which is really cool.
Just thought i'd mention it in case anyone else out there's stuck for a present for their bloke!

The only reason why both of these movies are being bundled together is the presence of the Irish mob in them. However, as far as gangster movies go, they are both idiosyncratic on their own rights.
Unlike The Godfather or Goodfellas where the benchmark for gangsterism in films were set, both of these movies concentrates on the "grunt" level of the mob. It's ground zero. Both movies feature a protagnist caught between conflicting conscience and interests.
Miller's Crossing shows a distinctive Coen style of story telling. Gabriel Byrne shines here, and should have gotten an Oscar nomination. Road to Predition, a prohibition-era take on the Japanese series, Lone Wolf and Cub, takes American everyman, Tom Hanks, into the role of a mob hitman. The crux ... Read More:
