In the DVD set that I have, the disc with the face of Tom Quinn indicated as disc 1 is actually disc 2. Imagine my puzzlement when I was waiting to see how the cliffhanger from series 1 would be resolved. Of course, if you look at where the indicating arrow on the rack in the opening menu is pointing, you then know which episode you should be viewing. I am a fan of Spooks and have watched every series to date but like a number of other people, I find the DVD set up annoying. A brief guide to each episode or at least an episode title on the case sleeve would help. I have resorted to inserting written notes in the case !

I thought these episodes were better than most of series 1 and 2, generally more interesting. Exception: The rock star child kidnap episode was truly dreadful.
Rupert Penry-Jones as Adam Carter is ; in my opinion, better than Mat MacFadayen ever was.

I'm giving this a couple of stars for effort...but in terms of attainment (or even entertainment) it's pretty woeful. After a promising start, the whole thing starts to fizzle out.

Don't get me wrong, I hugely applaud the BBC for doing a "live" drama. But it fails to recapture the tension that the original series episodes generates even looking at them half a century later.

Maybe we're more forgiving of things made long ago and horribly unforgiving of contemporary television. But then again it's hard to forgive a script that takes liberties with a classic piece of writing.

The longer the new show went on, the more pointless it felt to be re-inventing this classic story. And the new ending is pretty feeble.

'This life' went from being a cult show to being considered one of the finest dramas of the 90's. Watching this it's hard to disagree. Everything from the acting to the directing is superb. The camera work is one of the most innovative things about the whole series. The 'shakey' camera work and extreme close ups give a feeling of actually being there. And this was years before any Blair Witches. The storylines are sensitive, controversial and humourous in equal measures and it's impossible not to feel empathy with the characters, especially Egg. Was there been a finer British television moment in the 90's than the famous final scene? I don't think so. This is the programme that defined the 90's, defined an era, defined a generation. So get it now.

This film marks the first foray into the world of full-length features by Amy Jenkins, the creator of "This Life". We see strong ensemble work from the cast which features some faces that will be instantly familiar to British TV audiences and the luminescent beauty of Emmauelle Beart. We are invited as the unseen guests to a series of dinner parties among the hip and the chic of modern day London society, a ground which proves eerily familiar to afficionados of Jenkins' earlier TV work. We follow the fortunes/misfortunes of Billy in his search for "love" after prompting by his circle of "coupled" friends. But don't expect the title to be explained during the plot, you either know the reasoning behind it or you don't - I won't ... Read More:

DVD : Among Giants [1998] [1999]
What a disappointment! Started well, nice pylons, but the plot quickly lost all direction and moved from scene to scene of more pylon painting without any plot tension or idea of where it was all going. I found some of the love scenes wincingly trite (walking naked through running water and shouting "I love you"). There were odd scenes that were beautifully done, but I gave up before the end.

If you want a really brilliant film about the north starring Pete Postlethwaite, watch "Brassed Off". Like "Giants" it veers around between social realism and idealising the industrial landscape - but it finds a synthesis between the two, and is genuinely moving.
