For me, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie were, are and always shall be, the quintessential Jeeves and Wooster! As English as Pimms and Cucumber sandwiches, this glorious P.G. Wodehouse creation lifts the veil on the altogether more carefree life in 1920's high society, ironically observed through the wit of one of our great writers. And who better to bring it to the screen than two of our greatest comic talents.

Sadly, P.G. Wodehouse has suffered of late from the tight mouthed disapproval of Political Correctness. I wish that some people could just get over their left wing angst about "toffs" though, and see this for what it is - a wry and witty gallop through an entirely different era. This is comic farce, and it pokes fun at absolutely ... Read More:

Immerhin ... Read More:

I have to admit that although owning the 'Special' edition of this dvd, I've never sat through all episodes - until now. It was all quite dreary before, with decidedly muted colours and poor video quality. It really is quite a transformation, with clarity and colour that has long been missing. A worthwhile buy. ( I now understand why Mrs. Bennett had such contempt for Darcy!)

I didn't think Jeeves & Wooster could ever be succesfully transferred to screen until I saw this series. Absolutely brilliant! Lovely settings, costumes, music etc to back up the characters. Minor quibbles: frequent casting changes (e.g. three different Madeleine Bassets over the course of the series!), the third series is not quite as good as the first two and the fourth series is not as good as the third, oh, and of course the infuriating anti-piracy advert that you can't skip...my dvd player will only pause for about a minute before going back to the beginning, so every time I make a cup of tea, answer the phone etc...I have to watch that horrible thing all over again! I loved this series though, have watched it so much that I'm probably going to have ... Read More:

DVD : The Whistle Blower [1987]
Frank Jones (Michael Caine) has a son (Nigel Havers) who works in a top secret British intelligence agency. Frank has had experience in that line, but now has retired to a quiet and safe life. His son tells him that strange things are happening, and he's planning on leaving and marrying an older woman he's fallen in love with. He says a Soviet mole was found, that security is all over the place encouraging people to rat on each other. The higher ups seem convinced that if they don't do something, their American friends in the CIA will stop working with them.

Frank isn't thrilled over the marriage plans, and he tells his son that it's unlikely anything off key can be happening in the agency. It's obvious that Jones loves his son deeply and wants his son ... Read More:

DVD : Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Im only 17years old and i am obsessed with Jane Austen! Ive watched both versions of Pride and Prejudice as it's my favourite of the Austen collection. I think Keira was better for the character Elizabeth Bennet for certain, but i think Colin firth was amazing at playing darcey as i find him so sexy, but Matthew Macfadyen created more chemistry between them both! I think in the newer version you can see the tension between them both all the time and your just shouting at the tv coz you get frustrated at them both. I think the newer version is sooo much better without a doubt, but the older one if still very good. Id personally prefer the newer one!!!!!

DVD : Sherlock Holmes MURDER ROOMS collection - The White Knight Stratagem / The Kingdom of Bones / The Photographer's Chair / The Patient's Eyes / The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes - 3 disc DVD Box se
This 2000 BBC mini-series of the world most famous detective Sherlock Holmes, explores what may very well have been the dark beginnings of the British sleuth and his sidekick Dr Watson. In this European import five dvd case, the English version has unremovable Dutch subtitles, which is a minor drawback, considering what remains a bargain price (I got my case for a real good price). Ian Richardson is Dr Joseph Bell, from the University of Edinburgh, while Doyle (Watson) is played successively by Robin Laing and Charles Edwards. The series was shot entirely in Edinburgh, and manages to create a mysterious and foreboding atmosphere, at least as thrilling as that of White Chapel. What makes "The Dark beginnings of Sherlok Holmes" so interesting is its postulate; that Holmes was in fact ... Read More:

After eagerly anticipating the arrival of my birthday present, I was horrified on opening this to find that the adaptations date back as far as 1972 (Emma) and the most recent are 1995 (Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion). I'm a huge fan of the '95 version of P&P starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, but could have bought the 10th anniversary edition and saved myself money and a whole lot of disappointment. The older adaptations haven't stood up to the test of time; the acting style has dated, the sound quality is terrible, the colours washed out, and the camera work distracting. A further annoyance is that it wasn't possible to tell from the packaging that the versions were so old - I had to take the shrink-wrapping off (and thereby void my right to return) to find this out. Grrr.
