Conventional wisdom had it that the Western was dead when after years of false starts, Lonesome Dove finally made it to the screen. Starting life as a 1971 screenplay for John Wayne, James Stewart and Henry Fonda before becoming a best-selling Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, it was even briefly mooted as a possible vehicle for Redford and Newman as the two former Texas Rangers who go on one last cattle drive, but was deemed too risky for the big screen. The end result was certainly worth the long wait, earning huge ratings and a well-deserved reputation as one of the finest television Westerns ever made.

True, the first episode is a bit slow as the characters mull over the wisdom of ... Read More:

The story in this film is very simple, which is not suprising given that is from the Disney stable, where stories are made to be appreciated by children as young as 4. Rest assured that young children who like horses will like this film.

To sum it up, the film is set somewhere in the arabian peninsula at the end of World War II, there is young girl who finds a fiery young black stallion, makes friends with it and then rides the horse in a race to restore the fortunes of her grandfather who was once a proud and famous breeder but has fallen on hard times.

However, where this film really excels is that it is, quite simply, the most beautifully shot film of the most beautiful animal on the planet - the arabian stallion. ... Read More:

I liked this film so much I bought the belt buckle but ended up getting unexpected attention in the trouser department from people misunderstanding the message. I recommend going out one night with a Free Willy belt buckle if anyone is a bit quiet or single. I've hung up my buckle for now as I am happily coupled.

Anyway, this film is another load of fishy business. This story centres around a big killer pandafish stuck in a performing pool and a little toerag called Jesse. They get friendly with each other and then the schmaltz kicks in big time. Because the fish isn't too good at jumping out of the water and nodding for fish like irritating dolphin fish do, the owners decide to blow the willy the fish up claiming back on insurance. ... Twelve years passed before this trilogy was completed. The first two were fantastic, sharp and on the ball - this does not match up to their excellence. It is Mick back in the States this time in Los Angeles and it does bring things to a conclusion, ties up the loose ends etc., Wally is missing and is missed - not the stuff of 1 & 2 but it is enjoyable, if you have the other two buy it.

DVD : The Lighthorsemen [1987] (REGION 2) (PAL) [Dutch Import] [1988]
The Lighthorseman was a film I hated when I saw it years ago, but which I was overly harsh about. It's not a great film by a long shot, but it is extremely well directed by Simon Wincer in the days when he was the go-to guy for anything with horses, extremely well edited and quite beautifully photographed by Dean Semler in vivid colour. Retelling the Australian Light Horse's famous charge on Beersheba in WW1, the subject of the earlier and generally superior propaganda picture 40,000 Horsemen, it desperately wants to be another Gallipoli, but despite lavish production values is let down by a script that covers the history well enough but doesn't give us particularly well-drawn characters to care about - the mates the film focuses on may well be based on real ... DVD : Quigley Down Under [1990]
"Matthew Quigley is really beginning to annoy me." That's Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman) speaking. He owns a huge cattle station in Australia's outback and he's hired Quigley (Tom Selleck) to come over from America's wild west and do some shooting for him. When Quigley arrives at the station, however, he finds out the shooting Marston has in mind is the killing of Aborigines. The Australian government has left the "problem" of Aborigines up to the land owners and calls it pacification by force. As Marston points out to Quigley, "As primitive as they are, they've still learned to keep themselves out of rifle range." But Quigley's having none of it, gets into a fight with Marston, and winds up abandoned with a woman he befriended, Cora (Laura San Giacomo), in the ... Read More:

Set in the then-future of 1996, drifter Harley Davidson (played by Mickey Rourke) is in a motel in Texas when he hears about a dangerous new street drug named "Crystal Dream" on the radio. The significance of this street drug does not arise again until later in the film. Harley then decides to visit his erstwhile companion, a cowboy nicknamed The Marlboro Man (played by Don Johnson) and they plan a bank robbery to help save their friend's bar from being torn down and replaced with a skyscraper. However, after they rob a bank's armoured car, they discover the cargo they stole is in fact the designer drug "Crystal Dream", not money. The bank's president (who is involved in the shipment of the drugs) demands the return of the drugs. And a series of increasingly deadly encounters ... Read More:

For years, people have tried to bring Lee Falk's seminal jungle / superhero to the big screen, with no luck. This movie all but died in "development hell" several times, but you just can't keep a good Ghost-Who-Walks down!

Billy Zane was born to play this role, so it's a good thing that he's such a fan of the character (he "discovered" The Phantom in the late '80s while filming "Dead Calm" in Australia, where The Phantom is revered more than Batman is in the States). He brings the black & white / Good vs E-Ville sensibilities of the character to stunning life, & while he never takes it too seriously, he never makes fun of it either, which is a hard balance to achieve.

Treat Williams obviously had a cracking good time playing the main baddie, businessman ... Read More:

Quite a bit different from the book in some places. More psychological than most cowboy movies. The action slows in the middle of the movie to allow more space for Woodrow Call to portray his problems relating to other people. Great performance by him and Steve Zahn [Gus McCrae]. Also enjoyed watching Val Kilmer [Inish Scull] and his wife: Rachel Griffiths a hot, sexy woman [of a certain age] who 'takes no prisoners'. Wes Studi is also great as: Buffalo Hump. He appears more politically sanitised than in the book with focus upon the plight of his Commanche people, struggling to survive against a 'tide' of western settlers.
The scenery is great as are the photography and action sequences. Some of the violence has been toned down from the book for practical reasons [particularly the scenes ... Read More:
