DVD : The Lost Prince [2003]
This was one of the best ever BBC dramas.
It made me smile but at the end it will make you cry!
It showed some of history that you would never know about unless you were
a true historian.
Everybody played their part well.
Worth watching again and again.

I thought this was beautiful to look at and listen to. The same sort of background music is used in 'Perfect strangers' and 'Shooting the Past'. The characters tend to talk in the same precise way as in all the Poliakoff
productions, that I have seen anyway. That is something I have also noticed with adaptions of John Le Carre's works. Is that useful ? maybe not.

I thought Danny Lee Wynter was fascinating as Joe, a likable sort of innocent, though not so innocent as he may seem. Not as slow either. I also liked Rebecca Hall, who brought a witty touch to it. Rupert Penry-Jones and Kelly Reilly provide the eye candy, and are also very good.

Needless to say, Michael Gambon was superb.

In "Almost Strangers," Stephen Poliakoff weaves a subtle spell. I recall thoroughly enjoying the engaging story and the superb acting--after all, one cannot miss with Michael Gambon, Matthew Macfadyen, and Toby Stephens--when, totally unawares, I had become so entranced with the stories within the story of an extended family, that I had to watch all 237 minutes of it at one sitting.

Since the story is told from the point of view of Daniel (the son of the black sheep of the clan), who knows very little about the rest of the family, the viewer is put into a similar position, first of discomfort, as he confronts the stereotypes concomittant with meeting strangers, and finally of fascinated affection, as he slowly unravels the startling secrets not only of ... All the intellectual discourse in the world cannot disguise that these films were deeply disappointing. I am a huge Poliakoff fan and have viewed all his screen works that I am aware of starting with Caught on a Train. This film adopts the familiar surreal and highly atmospheric scenes with the most beautiful direction and cinematography. As usual, acting of the absolutely highest quality adds to the excellence. Sadly, however, to be truly brilliant, as most of Poliakoff's works are, there needs to be a good yarn. A story than draws in the viewer and keeps their attention. For me Capturing Mary failed to do this.

Having not previously seen Ruth Wilson, I was unclear whether her accent and diction was deliberately affected or her natural speaking voice. In parts ... Read More:

When Gideon's Daughter was first broadcast, one of the newspaper reviewers described it cruelly but accurately as a story about a guy who thinks that there's something wrong with his daughter, but she turns out to be fine.

Somehow, Stephen Poliakoff has emerged from the back of the field to become British television's most commissioned, most prestigious and incidentally most expensive television writer. This is an impressive feat for someone who can't devise dramatic (or even halfway plausible) stories, who can't write dialogue that even faintly resembles the way human beings speak, and who has absolutely no visible sense of humour. How he did it, I'm not sure. One reason is that most of the great British television dramatists are either dead, retired or out of the ... Read More:

This is variably acted pretentious tosh. I know Poliakoff has won countess awards but this one is a real turkey.
As her fans will know, this is the one where Anna Friel, anxious to be taken seriously as an actress rather thna just another ex-soap star, took all her clothes off in the name of art. Several times in fact, probably destroying her chances of ever being a major movie star in the process.
Enjoy those scenes, there's precious little else worth watching.

The mood is one of sadness, nostalgia, what might have been: an elegiac view of a recent past, a time already no more than a memory, beautifully filmed, full of haunting images.
It is not an attempt at realism; the interpretation relies heavily on symbolism, a shorthand to convey two decades of British social history.
It starts with a young man, Paul (Damian Lewis) of working class background who has made a fortune in property speculation in the 70's. Like any young man who finds himself wealthy beyond expectation, the power it gives him to indulge all his flights of fantasy leads to excesses and he is busy squandering his genius, cultivating a motley gathering of friends and hangers-on who come `like pigs to the trough' to gorge themselves on the riches he makes freely available ...
