When I bought the Mummy Returns on VHS I did so on the basis that I had a good time watching its predecessor, which as we all knew fell under "trashy but huge fun" and was deservedly a massive success. So naturally I thought the sequel would be a sound buy, and at the time (some seven years ago) I thought it was after seeing it. But looking back on both the Mummy and its sequel I realize that while the first Mummy was by no means Raiders Of The Lost Ark it was still a great ride, however cheesy it may have been, but The Mummy Returns begins to drag desperately at a point where the first movie went up a gear. Its not that I didn't enjoy The Mummy Returns (I think its quite clear I recommend The Mummy) or felt the effects were poor, but they don't ... Read More:

Nice box set.I purchased this title for the two main features, which are both very entertaining adventures(the scorpion king is a below par cash in)The mummy films have very little in common with the old boris karloff classic of the thirties-much more in the indiana jones action adventure theme, but for todays audience this is probably a good thing.Great action, effects and scenery make the first two films in this set well worth owning(you will only watch the scorpion king once, upon purchasing, but not again)

The film is, brilliant in words but unfortunately I will have to give it one star because the DVD case was covered in sticky stuff and the DVD itself was scratched, for this reason, buy it somewhere else...

A few minutes into this I realised that it was more of a kids film. Perhaps I was expecting something at least a little bit more sinister and gripping, but that certainly wasn't the case.

This movie does have great visual effects but it seems to be rather aimed at juveniles (13 or under?) which is a big surprise considering that it's officially rated 15.

Two-thirds of the way through I ended up slightly speeding up the DVD and reading it from the subtitles. If I had kids I would maybe sit them in front of it while I did something else like mowing the lawn.

DVD : The Mummy Returns (Two Disc Special Edition) [2001]
I bought this film after watching the first, and it is not as good. But that doesnt matter because i wasnt expecting it ot be. The storyline is nonsense and the animation of the Scorpion King was dreadful but they brought back much loved charcters and Rick and Evie's 8 yeard old son Alex. The fight scenes were good and the little pygmies mummies were great.
The thing that brought it down a star was was the fact, they sacrificed the horror like in the first one, to make it a 12 rating.
Overall, I felt the film was just a simple film, brought out after the sucess of the first but enjoyable to watch.
