Newsflash this film bears very little resemblance to the H.P Lovecraft short story. This does not mean that the film is no good. On the contrary this is one of my favourite horror films and the lead Jeffrey Combs is one of my favourite horror actors. Herbert West is a student who has developed a serum that can bring dead tissues to life. Abandoning any moral code West begins to test out his serum in America (in the intro we see him testing it in europe supposedly fingers crossed they will soon release a prequel). It has disastrous results notably with a roommate's cat. Soon West and his roommate who is initailly black mailed by West(he is sleeping with the deans attractive daughter) and then decides to willingly help him in his quest.

Another reviewer rates this as 'two' because Alien is much better than all of these films.

Quite right, Alien is much better, but competing with Alien is not what they set out to do! To judge it on this basis would be like saying that a Mini is no good as a car because it couldn't beat Lewis Hamilton's F1 vehicle in a race.

Instead, judge it against what it is: a TV series boxed set, and realise that what you're getting here are seven films by, gasp, 'masters of horror' for the price of one. Their combined budgets were probably less than that of Alien (or at least what Alien would cost today) and one of the commentaries mentions having just a handful of days to do all the shooting.

All are worth watching ... Read More:

Cigarette Burns: Just plain boring, rubbish plot and unsatisfactory ending.

Dreams in the Witch-House: Not seen this one yet so cannot judge.

Incident On and Off A Mountain Road: Really, really good! Just...great! I loved this one and the ending was just 'wow'.

Chocolate: Kinda 'meh', doesn't do much but the flashback narrative is well done.

Sick Girl: Accurately portrays how awkward homosexual relationships are sometimes! Plus there's not too much 'bug-i-ness' for those who are arachnophobic. The actress who played Ida was spot on and was the one woman in the series who didn't get her breasts out, which makes her all the better! There was a point where I just wanted to see what would happen with them ... Read More:

Starring Jeffrey Combs (of Re-Animator fame). A tale of scientists trying to create a machine to see creatures that live in our atmosphere, that are usually invisible to the human eye. And then it all goes amazingly wrong for the two scientists. Blood and guts (or brains) aplenty here. All i can say is watch out for Combs staring into the camera and uttering the words "and it bit off his head like....like a ginger bread man".

Being a big fan of the Highlander films (excluding 4-5, including
search for vengeance)and Christopher lambert I bought fortress years
ago on vhs expecting pretty much the same sort of fair as Highlander
and I was nicely surprised.

What surprised me the most was how watchable fortress is, I must have
watched my old vhs dozens of times and to be honest im still not tired
of it now.

The plot is very easy to get into, if a little clicé but that doesnt matter
you dont need to think with fortress because it is good old straight forward
action fair that any sci-fi fan can enjoy especially on a rainy day.

Production value wise Fortress is almost B-movie but not quite,
meaning that sometimes ... Read More:

life were like this...

A decent enough film.. but if you google for the real story, you realise real life is infinitely sadder and real people are sickeningly more hideous than fictitious films pretend.

The Pit and the Pendulum tells the story of a woman and her husband that are "forced" to watch an Inquisition execution. Trapped in the middle of the mob, they can't turn back.
The problem starts when Maria is unable to watch more and decides to defend the accused. She is immediately considered 'a witch'.
This is not a horror movie, although it has some scenes that may get on your nerves.
I consider the story behind it very interesting, although the acting is not as good as the story. Brother Torquemada is played by Lance Henriksen (Bishop, from Aliens).

Despite its promising beginning, this was an unsatisfying film which even William H Macy's brooding, minimalist acting failed to redeem. I thought that the direction was too stylised and the characters seemed two-dimensional, making it hard to feel engaged with the narrative.

'Edmond' had some amusing moments and some fairly shocking ones too, but unlike Pulp Fiction they didn't work together and the result was an uneven film that couldn't seem to decide whether it was drama or comedy.

I won't be watching it again.
