I am not sure if this follows the classic novel accurately but it is an adult series set in the 12th century that kept me watching until the end. The story was well acted and the scenes brilliantly done. Even the costumes and surroundings were relatively accurate (no biros or aircraft scooting across the sky, or zips!!) This is a magnificent effort by the BBC.
It only has one minor drawback and that is the sound track, whilst it is not as dominant as I thought it would be, still has its moments of corny sound effects. It is an adult version of Ivanhoe so I resent the children's television soundtrack that occasionally came in but that is a very minor annoyance. I think sound engineers go into withdrawal if there is just dialogue. Anyway, ... Read More:

First of all, any movie that includes Lawrence Fox is worth watching (I haven't seen him in anything I haven't liked, so far.); next, I found this well-acted two-part series absorbing from beginning to end. Damian Lewis is also excellent in the role of the charming rogue who almost gets away with his villainy.

The problem with the story, it seems to me, is that it couldn't quite make up its mind as to genre: Escape yarn? Love story? Murder mystery? Espionage thriller? It is all of these, but, given the name of the film, I can see how anyone expecting the first might be disappointed, since the narrative passes so quickly over many of the riveting details of the great escape stories that emerged during the 1950s, which concentrated both ... This version of Goodbye Mr Chips is in my opinion a superb production and by far the best version yet made. The story is familiar, a strict disciplinarian schoolmaster who mellows with age and wins the love and respect of everyone around him.

Martin Clunes was an inspired choice for the part of Mr Chipping, and his powerful performance was the most touching thing I have ever seen.... ever! I defy anyone with half a heart to watch this film and remain unmoved by it.

Martin Clunes played Chips from a young twenty-something, through to a caring and much beloved headmaster in his late eighties, and not only is his performance thoroughly believable, the make-up department also did a bang-up job in making him look totally genuine as ... Read More:

Somehow I missed this first time around, and tuned in to see it on BBC3, however missed a lot of that as well, so time to buy the DVD. Have to say this was an excellent DVD, well shot, good special effects and an outstanding cast list. Also, for once, this was pretty faithful to the original unlike many Hollywood remakes. Well worth a purchase!

Its been quite a number of years ago now but I do remember seeing the TV Adaptation of The Sculptress on BBC1.

I think the acting by Pauline Quirke, who played Olive Martin, was quite chilling and showed that she could move away from the role of Sharon she played in Birds of a Feather and other comedic roles she was used to. You were also convinced of Olive's innocence within the film.

But I do look forward to reading the novel version of The Sculptress to make comparisons between the TV Adaptation and the novel quite soon.

This TV series is quite different to the excellent Raymond Briggs book. The book hasn't got a real storyline, being more like an comic strip encyclopedia on the life of Bogeymen (Fungus) and bogeywomen (wife Mildew) and their bogeychildren. The book just charts a day in life of a bogeyman, who it seems, exists merely to torment us 'Drycleaners'. Briggs illustrated study of bogeydom delights in all things revolting, putrid, and lavatorial, and even raises deep questions on the meaning of Bogeydom life. However considering the TV serial has a lot of live action as well as animated bogeys, it works very well in terms of visual quality. The only weak aspect is that the storyline is a bit poor and there just aren't enough visual and literary gags compared the book, e.g. ... Read More:

This was transmitted in two parts in England in 2006 and was one of the television highlights of the year.

The basic plot is the re-appearance of a British submarine that was lost and sunk in World War 2, the only survivor is recruited by the admiralty to attempt to discover what happened to the rest of the crew and how the submarine resurfaced. After boarding the sub the investigation team begin to take on characteristics of the original crew and their ultra secret mission, to destroy a top secret target in Russia and set sail to complete this task that was set in motion 65 years previously.

The drama is a mix of a ghost story coupled with science fiction and is very reminiscent of Sapphire and Steel in dealing with the past pushing through ... Read More:

This film was a childhood favourite for me. When mentioning the film to others, most people would say that they haven't had the chance to see it and have never even heard of it, which i feel is a great shame. It has some great actors and is a really good story line. When buying this film i wasn't sure if i would be spoiling the illusion that i had of it from when i was a child, but i was very pleased to find that i still enjoyed it as much as i did when i was a child, and have watched it many times since. Give it a go, you won't regret it.
