How times change - i remember seeing this about 20 years ago, and loving it, mainly because it had certain personal echoes with a relationship about that time. Having recently seen it again, whilst it remains a fascinating 'light' movie set in a particular time, looking at the politics of that time, Streisand's performance seems very dated, very much a 'Hollywood star performance' I'm very aware of the ego of the actress in here, and began, in my head, watching a different film, wanting to see someone like Susan Sarandon in the role, someone who could turn in a leading lady charismatic performance whilst keeping HERSELF out of the way, and letting the character take centre stage.

Redford manages to be himself in a more covert way, ... Read More:

He likes to distill his movies' themes into a single word, Sydney Pollack explains on "Out of Africa"'s DVD. Here, that word is "Possession:" The possessiveness of the colonialists trying to make Africa theirs; to rule her with their law, settle on the local tribes' land, dress their African servants in European outfits (complete with a house boy's white gloves), import prized belongings like crystal to maintain the comforts of European civilization, and teach African children to read, to remove their "ignorance." And the possessiveness of human relationships; the claim of exclusivity arising from a wedding license, the encroachment on personal freedom resulting if such a claim is raised by even one partner - regardless whether based on a legal document ... I have every film adapted from John Grisham's novels except for The Gingerbread man, without a shadow of a doubt this is at best an okay film, it does not even begin to touch A time to kill, The Client, Runaway jury or The Chamber and whilst not being blown away by either The Rainmaker nor The Pelican brief, they are both comfortably better films than this.

The film lacks the power, conviction and the direction of all of those films listed.

An excellent cast with 2 of my favourite actors in Gene Hackman and Tom Cruise, but even they are not at their best by some way, the only reason why Tom Cruise stands out is due to his being on screen for most of the film, Gary Busey is barely in the film, maybe a couple of minutes at best.

Having watched The English Patient a few times recently I was looking on Amazon for something along similar lines, and luckily i discovered the Best Picture of 1986--Out of Africa. "A classic along the lines of The English Patient" I mumbled to myself as i placed the dvd into the player and cracked open a bottle of red wine.

The slow pace of the movie put me off, and all we learn in the first hour is that Meryrl Streep contracts shyphillis from her cheating husband in Africa, and then Robert Redford enters the scene with a dodgy English accent and saves her from boredom and a sham marriage.

John Barry's score is one of the films highlights. The cinematography is excellent but the directing is poor. Pollack, the director, must have wanted ... Read More:

Not your typical `western' by any means, this is a portrait of a man trying to escape a society he doesnt like, only to find a new set of troubles in the mountains.

The sparse script is brilliant in its simplicity, people's faces in the film convey their feelings silently but with a intensity that shines through. Especially between Redford and his flathead wife.

Atypically for a hollywood western, its quite traumatic in parts, there are no happy endings here, maybe a hint of hope at the end, but ultimately this is a realistic depiction of the harsh realities of frontier life, and a unique one, as far as I've never seen film like it.

Brilliant film in all, suprised it's not more widely known.

After renting this DVD following the good reviews on here, I just wanted to stop anyone else wasting an evening watching this utter tosh, as I did.

I watched to the bitter end in the vain hope it would eventually get better, and it doesn't. Wooden acting, hammy lines, a desperately over-aged cast that makes the main premise of the plot laughable and a cast of entirely dislikeable, shallow characters, means this is one film I would not recommend anyone to see.

Maybe the original, with better cast actors and made in a different era, was quite good. I don't know, I haven't seen it. But for even the most die-hard Harrison Ford fan (and believe me, I like him a lot usually), this is one to miss. How he got through the film without cracking up at the abysmal ... Read More:

Even with an abundance of flares and feather-cuts this this film is timeless. It raises so many issues that are still relevant today. This is one of Robert Redfords finest performances but it is Max Von Sydow as the hitman that steals the picture. Cannot recommend this highly enough plus it includes great footage of inside the twin towers.

DVD : The Yakuza
Harry Kilmer(Robert Mitchum)returns to Japan after 20 years to intercede on the behalf of an old friend George Tanner(Brian Keith)who has fallen foul of the powerful Tono clan in business. However not all is at it seems and Kilmer ends up getting old flame Eiko(Kishi Keiko)and her "brother Tanaka Ken(Takakura Ken)involved in a complex and haunting tale of honour and betrayal.
Atypical material for Sydney Pollack(written by Paul Schrader and Robert Towne)is however beautifully judged with Pollack capturing the contradiction of Japanese hi-tech business and the culture's pathological adherence to an historical code of honour with great skill.
Both Mitchum and Ken are first rate and the Yakuza,if a touch humourless, delivers some brutal action. One of the best thrillers of the ... Read More:

The Interpreter is not that exciting and it does not have so many twists and turns in the plot that it is too interesting either, but it is a competently made film with good dialogue and has two fine performances from sean penn and nicole kidman to keep the viewer watching. It is the chemistry between these two and their shared suffering that make the film worth seeing.
