When I first saw ICHI THE KILLER it was the 15-minutes-cut-out German DVD version, it didn't leave an impression on me. Just another pointless film. But after seeing the Unrated US version I must say, this movie has an impact. Although excessively violent and sadistic (all though the over-the-top gore cannot be taken seriously) it is quite entertaining and can well live up to the other MIIKE films. Tadanobu Asano (Kakihara) plays a well enough sado-masochistic baddie (quite a character!) whom you will remember well afterwards! I must say this is one of the most groundbreaking films within the last decade, although not for all tastes. On the negative side: I got the impression Miike hates women, as they are constantly being beaten and tortured ... Read More:

A not very interesting example of the 'J-Horror' phenomenon; as one reviewer has described a tick the boxes approach with sparse orginality or fresh ideas on show.
Very much in the style of Ringu with a young woman racing against time to explain the sudden rash of deaths with her next in line to meet the long haired one, but not nearly as well executed or as interesting. As it materialised this premise turned out not to be quite as straightforward but for me this still could not lift the film beyond mediocrity.
It felt like most of the film was just filler until the director could present his grand finale. It was very contrived at times how people met and relationships were formed, the characters in the film were able to access all sorts ... Read More:

The current wave of Hollywood horror movies seems to produe very few, if any, truly horrific pieces of cinema. To find examples of these I have looked to the Japanese horror market and discovered a number of absolute gems. Audition begins as a beautiful romantic drama, engaging the viewer with four or five complex, intriguing characters and the interesting premise of a writer holding a fake audition for a new wife. At this point I would suggest anyone who has not seen the film to stop reading this review now and go watch the movie. It would be best viewed cold knowing no more than i have told you here, for after the calm but captivating beginning Miike plunges us into hell. After this turn the film contains some of the most arresting and scary moments ... Read More:

Takashi Miike is known for having made zillions of movies: he films several movies a year, almost all genre films. As a result, he has developed quite a cult reputation. I have seen only two of his films - Audition (probably his most famous film, and one I found to be thoroughly repulsive) and this one. I found Katakuris to be a mixed bag: this combination of a musical with a terror flick - with "The Sound of Music" added just for the heck of it - just doesn't work very well. If it sounds like a bad mix, it is. There are only a few redeeming features that makes it worth watching - two musical numbers, in particular - one at the end, and the other at the middle called In Love. The other redeeming feature is the presence of Naomi Nishida, an actress I found ... Read More:

Not as good as Volume 1 in the Box Set series...but it's quite good.

Jenifer: Too gruesome, too pointless, too weird. The odd relationships in this episode were uneasy and there was too much of everything but not in a cool way like Planet Terror. Just in a 'uuurrrggh' way.

Dance of the Dead: The scenes with the teenagers were cool, but there was too much pointless nudity AGAIN and the story was just kind of...boring.

Haeckel's Tale: Haven't had time to watch this one yet, so I cannot make a judgement.

Fair-Headed Child: Excellent, well acted and just gruesome enough to be creepy PLUS Lori Petty's there, good to see she's still acting, you might remember her from 'Tank Girl' and the same manic energy is in a subdued form ... Read More:

Dead or Alive (1999) was a straight to video police/yakuza cross-over that opened with a rock-video style montage and climaxed with a scene of jaw-dropping implausibility. It took on the clichés and characteristics of the usual police dramas that we're familiar with but infused them with all manner of bold and brash directorial flourishes and much in the way of attention grabbing shock sequences; from the sight of a stripper drowned in a paddling pool of excrement, to a vicious gun battle that brings about the end of the world. This follow up - which takes the same lead actors from the first DOA and drops then into a whole new setting as entirely new characters (giving us a sequel in the thematic sense alone) - tones down much of the first film's explicit giddiness in favour of a richer ...
