This is one of the finest Hammer films, based on Dennis Wheatley's novel. The Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee) and Rex van Ryn (Leon Greene)try to save a friend, Simon Aron (Patrick Mower) from the clutches of a satanic cult led by the evil Mocata (Charles Gray), and encounter many obstacles along the way. There's also a love story sub plot between Rex and Tanith, a girl caught in the cult's grip. The film's fast paced, entertaining, and the cinematography is impeccable, lush, and sensual. Lee is excellent and very charismatic as the hero and Charles Gray is convincing as Mocata, and the other performances are pretty good, but Leon Greene's character, although affable, is a bit too obtuse and naive to be credible, in my opinion, no more than ... Two English couples holidaying in Transylvania fall foul of the mysterious count...'Dracula:Prince of darkness' isn't a bad film, it just lacks some of the 'gore and boobs' of the following sequels. It's certainly atmospheric, and the cast is excellent: Lee of course is good as Dracula, though his appearances are relatively few, Andrew Keir memorable as the Monsignor (witness the scene where he warms his backside by the inn fire!),Philip Lathom is creepy as Dracula's butler, Klove, and Francis Matthews is well cast as the hero;Thorley Walters makes a suitably gormless appearance as a fly eating madman, while Barbara Shelley transforms herself from a complaining old bat into one hot fangfaced fox indeed after falling victim to ol'red eyes.

DVD : The Man Who Could Cheat Death [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
It's great to have this fondly-remembered early offering from Hammer available on DVD at last. It's a wonderful period piece, with all the usual hallmarks of the family film production unit settled cosily into their studios beside the Thames at Bray: lavishly-dressed sets, gorgeous costumes, a literate script and actors who can act and who take their roles seriously. It's not so much a horror film as a melodrama with horror overtones. Anton Diffring wrestles magnificently with his dilemma of how to keep himself still young after 100+ years, and Hazel Court is even more beautiful than she was in The Curse of Frankenstein. She essays her role of Janine as something more than eye candy and graces the film with her benign and intelligent presence.

I love how Van Helsing carried on from the original although it would have been nice to see Christopher Lee. This is my favorite Peter Cushing film. I live in America and originally I bought the R1 DVD included in "The Hammer Horror Series" boxset from universal but I had nasty results with the disks, Brides of Dracula being part of it so I bought a Multi Region DVD Player and bought this DVD and now am able to view one of my favorite Hammer/Peter Cushing films.

I love this movie! It is a true gem for fans of vintage British film, and I was amazed at not having seen this earlier, as it is a classic. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing make great performances in this beautifully shot, tightly paced Sherlock Holmes chiller, which has stood the test of time without problem. This is my favorite among the many collaborations that Lee and Cushing made throughout their career. The sets are gorgeous and create just the right atmosphere. Who needs CGI? They sure don't make them like this anymore.

This is an excellent adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, it doesn't remain as loyal to the book as other adaptations do but still, it's excellent! Peter Cushing is the best Van Helsing and Christopher Lee is the best Dracula, undoubtedly. On the DVD, the quality of the sound and footage is excellent, no scratches, this is overall and excellent release.

Warning!May contain spoilers!
This, the second in Hammer's long running Frankenstein series, starts off where The Curse Of Frankenstein finished, with the Baron on his way to the guilottine. He of course escapes, a hapless priest taking his place.
Three years later, we find him masquerading as Doctor Stein, operating two practices, one for the rich populus, which funds his work with the poor, and also his experiments. With the help of another Doctor, Hans Kleve(Francis Matthews) he attempts to transplant the brain of his physically deformed assistant Karl, into a perfect body. Everything appears to go well, until his creation(Michael Gwynne) suffers a brain injury in a fight, and starts to degenerate into a murderous flesh eater.

DVD : Icons of Adventure (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is a superb collection of Hammer action/adventure films. All of these movies have superb casts and stunning production values, no CGI in sight here, just Hammer films at their very best.

The two pirate movies are the standouts here, but 'Terror Of The Tongs' is a real gem.

Each film has a commentary track and there are trailers for each film, plus a cartoon and a rare short. This is a must-have DVD set for Christmas, & good clean fun for the family.

DVD : The Mummy [1959] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
the mummy films have never been hammer's most successful franchise, even though this one has peter cushing and christopher lee in it.
the plot is rather vague and too little happens until about the last 25 minutes, then suddenly the film picks up.
to be fair, there are some good scenes. it somehow feels reassuring to see christopher lee have some dialogue before he becomes mummified; the music is better than i thought; peter cushing is his usual dependable self.
however, despite the fact that the 1932 version by universal has its shortcomings, that film had boris karloff to help make it a success. karloff gives THE definitive portrayal of the mummy/high priest. he easily made it his own, but christopher lee is perfectly alright.
it seemed ... Read More:

Peter Cushing effortlessly dominates this very good Hammer film, which would prove to be the best of their late Frankenstein movies. What makes this film a cut above the average Hammer film is the fine script by Anthony Hinds, which gives the film the feel of a classic Victorian horror story. You could believe this was based on a book by Mary Shelley or Bram Stoker.

Cushing portrays Baron Frankenstein as a driven man, intent at all costs to prove that the soul lives on after death, and that the soul can be returned to the body if the body is brought back to life... You can see where this is going. Cushing plays the role with his usual authority and even has the opportunity to show the Barons superiority in a court room, which is a lovely scene. Even if you ...
