Collecting the six `official' movies featuring Bond number one, Sean Connery:

Dr No: James Bond's cinematic debut is an exotic mystery with a few classic moments along the way; Sean Connery's introduction and the shot of Ursula Andress walking out of the sea have passed into cinematic legend, whilst the film itself is an involving adventure, and a close adaptation of the original novel. Joseph Wiseman's Dr No is a fine villain, and Jack Lord's Felix Leiter was never bettered either.

From Russia With Love: Simply put, the finest of the Bond series; this movie provided the benchmark by which all future Bond films would be judged. A well-plotted cold war thriller, it features career-best performances from Connery and Pedro ... Read More:

If you're after saving some space on the shelf and a little bit of cash over buying the individual releases then this is what you want. The packaging is a competent fold out digipack style. The films themselves look excellent in High Def. Some people say there's not much improvement over the recent UEs. However the extra detail is apparent, of course it is. There's only so much upscaling DVDs can get you. The set is encoded for regions A,B,C.

The Bond films vary in quality even more widely than the books, but this is still, hands-down, the best Bond film. It's more concerned with espionage than stunts, with character than supposedly cool one-liners, it has that gorgeous look of the best 60s films, it's not remotely self-referential and it doesn't have to struggle against competing spy/action franchises because it's so far ahead of the few rivals it had back then anyway. This DVD set makes FRWL look freshly-minted and is a significant step up from all previous editions. It looks good enough to eat - in fact, it's hard to imagine that hi-def could look significantly better.

With an embryonic and not entirely successful Robert Brownjohn title sequence of credits projected onto body of belly dancer (some great spelling mistakes here, as `Monte' Norman and `Martin' Beswicke's agents probably pointed out!), Barry's first official Bond score and Blofeld's first (off-screen) appearance, the formula is clearly beginning to fall into place. This was also the first of the series to have a pre-title sequence, one of the few that relates directly to the film's plot, and it is still by far the most successful of any of them.

The gadgets that were to eventually get so out of hand make first appearance in form of Bond's ingenious attaché case, but at least here they are still entirely credible - nothing more extravagant than a well ... Read More:

This 1962 movie based on Ian Fleming's book contains the first or our favorite charters, including Sean Connery as James Bond, Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder, and Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny. A surprise and shocker is seeing Jack Lord playing the U.S. CIA agent Felix Leiter.

The earlier Bond movies required more acting than fancy gadgets. However you will still recognize his puns.

Dr. No is suspected of being up to no good. A previous agent on the trail of this mysterious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) seems to have disappeared. And there are no more transmissions from the local outpost in Jamaica. So it is up to James Bond (Sean Connery) to find out what happened and finish the project. Naturally he finds trouble from the beginning; however this is ... Read More:

Red Sun aka Soleil Rouge is one of those gloriously demented pitches - cowboys and samurais in a French-Italian Western shot in Spain by an English director with a Swiss leading lady. As if that isn't mad enough, the villain is Alain Delon's French cowboy, who leaves his train robbing buddy Charles Bronson to take the fall after stealing the Emperor of Japan's gold sword, leaving Bronson and the Japanese ambassador's samurai bodyguard Toshiro Mifune with only seven days to track it down before the Kurosawa regular has to commit hari-kiri ("Now that's something I'd like to see!" quips Bronson). Oh, and Ursula Andress and Capucine are along for the ride, as is Terence Young regular Anthony Dawson as the screen's unlikeliest cowboy desperado. Throw in a hostile tribe of Comanches on the ... 'Here comes the biggest Bond of them all!' screamed the ads. But while this is still the high water mark of the series at the box-office - selling more tickets than any other Bond, inflation-adjusted to today's prices its box-office take would exceed a billion dollars - it's also pretty much the clunkiest Bond in its determination to throw everything and the kitchen sink into the mix.

Opening with an excellently choreographed but very badly over-edited fight sequence, the formula is fully established here: the megalomaniacal villain, the ruthless disposal of underlings, perverted villain ("Vargas does not drink, does not smoke, does not make love. What do you do, Vargas?"), the obligatory three women for Bond to dally with and the archetypal Maurice Binder title sequence replacing ... Read More:

Hard to believe now, but on its first release the film that started it all was sold as much on the scenery as anything else. In the days before foreign package holidays really took off, the glamorous locations gave the low-budget film an exotic look that helps hide some of its limitations.

Terence Young, Cubby Broccoli and co-writer Richard Maibaum had all previously worked together on the Alan Ladd starrer The Red Beret - indeed, many of the Bond regulars had worked on Broccoli's fairly undistinguished British pictures - and at times the initial uncertainty of tone is noticeable, with the film occasionally threatening to turn into a predictable British `quota quickie' at times. Young's direction of some of the early scenes is, it must be said, rather ham-handed - indeed, turn down the colour and ... Read More:
