I somehow got to the age of 47 without seeing this all the way through, and sat down to watch it with anticipation. However, I was a bit disappointed. Unlike Life Of Brian this is not really a film with a plot & characters. Rather a series of themed sketches. Like most sketch shows it is a mixture of hit & miss. Bits are indeed very funny, but while this style of humour was radical when the film came out it is all too common now and some of the weaker moments don't stand up so well. Of course it has a place in the pantheon of British comedy and I wouldn't discourage anyone from watching it, but for me it isn't a patch on Life of Brian, or even the Time Bandits.

Before you watch this movie (and then dismiss it, as others have done, as incomprehensible and bizarre) you MUST either read or listen to the book or audio book.
Having done both, I can happily report that Terry Gilliam has done a first class job (with Hunter S Thompson's blessing) of creating this overlooked masterpiece. The lead roles of Duke (Johnny Depp) and Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) are expertly and accurately portrayed, much as I imagined they would be when reading the book.
Furthermore, the support characters and Vegas ambience adds to the mix.

In short, read the book, then watch the movie ...... and don't stop in bat country.

Fans of Gilliam will find much to keep them happy here. There's nightmarish, dystopian imagery in spades, dream sequences are lavish and the finale is really quite masterful.

The problem however, lies in the rest of the film. The humour kept me interested for about the first 30-45 minutes, after which it starts to wear a little thin. The same can be said about the plot - it starts out snappily enough but becomes seemingly endless in the latter half of the film. Logical ending points give rise to yet further story development and at over 2 hours in length, it became quite a slog to get through. Lastly, the characterisation just didn't work for me. Not sure if it was the acting, the script, or both but I didn't care too much for any ... Read More:

This is a full blooded Terry Gilliam film. It defies easy categorisation as all his films do. It's a morality tale, a swashbuckling adventure, a wicked comedy, a fantasy romp and a horror film all rolled into one.

It features excellent performances from all the leads, including an outstanding turn from Matt Damon as a preening, vain, overconfident con-man. The Bourne films clearly only use 1% of his acting ability - and here we get a full tour de force.

If you liked Munchhausen, if you liked Brazil - then you will love this.

If you want Van Helsing, a swords and corsets historical romance or you like your films explained to you every 5 minutes - then run away now...

I'm a big fan of Terry Gilliam and his surreal and often quirky films. He has a distinct eye for the absurd and the very weird, and he brings those talents to this film, creating an unique interpretation of Richard LaGravenese's story.

The film follows a New York radio shock DJ, Jack Lucas (played with brilliant style by Jeff Bridges), as he is about the sign a lucrative deal that could win him fame and fortune throughout the US. Riding the waves of his new found fame and becoming increasingly arrogant, he makes an off-hand comment to a mentally unstable man which triggers a terrible tragedy.

His career now in ruins, he is forced to work at a downtown video shop, where he wallows in self pity and turns to alcohol to avoid his demons. ... Read More:

Monty Python has a tendency to use, reuse and even overuse some tricks when he has invented them. Here he will definitely overuse and abuse the after-dinner mint. And yet, even if I have never thought Monty Python to be the genius of the second half of the 20th century some think he is, the film has some marvelous scenes that are worth the watching, for example the attack of the old City of London clerks against the super-tyrannical City of New York Stock Exchange, generally known as Wall Street. It becomes a pirate tale and it is funny, even as a satire of the excessive power of the financial market in and on our ordinary lives. A new slavery? Probably. The restaurant scene is overdone unluckily and the vomiting is by far too much to be just funny. It is disgusting, gross, ... Read More:

As a Gilliam fan I was expecting far more from this but, as has been said before, this is possibly due to the original story on which the film was based. Things do tend to drag quite a bit after the demise of Geoff Bridges' character. And I was contantly waiting for 'something more' to happen. That said, the film is beautifully shot and well acted and the 'fantasy' scenes are memorable when Gilliam actually gives free reign to his imagination .

'Munchausen' is a truly great film. It's Terry Gilliam's finest film (debatable) and certainly - in terms of production - the most controversial.

The film - for those unfamiliar - tells the tall tale of the Baron attempting to save a beseiged city from the Turkish army and end a war he claims responsibility for. In order to do so, the aged Baron must quest to find his faithful servants whilst accompanied by Sally Salt - the child protagonist and main focus of the movie.

For 2 hours you are treated to a spectacularly lavish fantasy world from a trip to the moon in a balloon made of knickers, to the pit of a smouldering volcano, the belly of a whale and then to an amazing final battle in which everything, but death, can be finally conquered.

The film is an examination ... Read More:
