This Tristan arrived with plenty of hype and is certainly about as good as one dare hope for in these times. The staging, although conceptual, is at least imaginative and visually striking without being completely foolish or haphazard. Yet,as is always the way with opera nowadays, there are annoying details, mannerisms, which will pall on repeated viewing.

Nina Stemme, it must be presumed, will blossom into the great Wagner soprano of this quarter of the new century. At the moment, her acting leaves a little to be desired. There is little sense of consuming passion, erotic love or transcendence in this performance. Her constant smirk during Marke's despair is truly painful to watch.

The tenor, Robert Gambill, looks ... Read More:

Rameau - Les Indes galantes / Petibon · Agnew · Croft · Hartelius · Rivenq · de Niese · Panzarella · Le Roi · Les Arts Florissants · Christe - Serban (Opéra de Paris 2004) [2003]

Indes Galantes composed in 1735 is Rameau's most popular work, and in this lively and colourful production making the most of the mythological, Turkis, Inca and Red Indian settings.

The intensity and depth of the colours mainly using equal tones is masterly, the work comprising equal parts of opera and ballet in outstanding choreography.

The singers are all period specialists directed by William Christie, and I recommend reading the fine review by "A Customer - 13 Jul 2005" to get a full understanding of this outstanding ... Read More:

We've been treated to some stupendous productions on DVD of Rameau opéras-ballets in recent years, not least by William Christie and his Arts Florissants (Les Indes Gallantes, Les Paladins). This version of Les Boréades looked too good to miss, with old favourites in this repertoire like Agnew and Naouri performing alongside well-known names like Bonney and Spence. I found much to admire in the rather dark staging and the effective use of 1940's costumes (though that won't be to everyone's taste) but I was disappointed by two things. First, Bonney's French diction simply didn't sound French (maybe that's just my ignorance of the language). Second, much more importantly, the La La La Human Steps choreography was hopelessly distracting. The dancers gyrated ... Read More:

I never like modern productions - I get annoyed when they change the plot or put people in silly costumes - and I got annoyed a lot by the visuals of this DVD - but it sounds good and the subtitles are OK.

Giovanni Paisiello (1741-1816) is best known for having written the first opera based on 'The Barber of Seville.' It was so popular in its day that when, thirty years later, Rossini wrote his version it was considered an outrage. We all know how THAT turned out. Nonetheless, Paisiello was a talented opera composer who had the misfortune not to be Mozart. And thus although his operas have pretty much disappeared from the world's stages they deserve periodic revival.

This DVD captures a production of 'Nina, o sia La Pazza per Amore' ('Nina, or The Girl Driven Mad by Love') done at the Zurich Opera in 1998. It also includes a fascinating 40-minute documentary on Paisiello and 'Nina' done by Reiner Moritz that includes commentary by the opera's director, ... Read More:

DVD : Il Turco In Italia - Rossini [2002]
I wasn't familiar with this Rossini Opera, but I'm very glad to know it now. The producton is fast moving and funny. All the soloists are superb and play up to their characters very well. How do they manage the fast bits without tripping over their tongues?! The orchestra was also superb and Conductor Franz Welser-Most kept everything together beautifully. There are so many good and fine moments that it's not possible to mention them all. Nice to see Ruggero Raimondi doing Opera Buffo-I've only seen him as a nasty Scarpia. He's still doing his lascivious bit though!!
I noticed the front of the staging had started to collapse(you'll have to watch the DVD to see what I mean)so had Oliver Widmer(Poet). At the beginning of the First ... Read More:
