It's a film which could only have happened in the 1970's; Bob Guccione, owner of Penthouse magazine and flush with wealth after riding the sexual license of the preceding decade set out to remake himself into an artist. He certainly succeeded in creating a film which maintains a reputation thirty years on (and how many do that?), but what reputation? And did he create art? Not a chance.
On paper, Caligula has a lot going for it; the sets and visual design are sumptuous and must have cost a fortune and the casting is a list of a-class thesps including John Gielgud, Maccolm MacDowell and Peter O'Toole. The only thing that lets it down is that it really isn't a very good film. Guccione brought everything he'd learned from making porn movies ... Read More:

The only way to watch this is with the sound turned down. The soundtrack is muffled and poorly dubbed. The storyline would bore a five year old and the girls voices had the sex appeal of Andy Pandy. Quite the most tedious film I have ever watched half of.

I have to say this is a film with a slightly porno heart despite its arty pretensions, which themselves does the film credit, because, unlike the mass of American softcore nonsense out there that is bland and predictable there is something unique about the colours, imagery and ambience of any Tinto Brass film which helps you suspend your judgement for a while as you are transported by the story. The actress is beautiful in a summery, frivolous and carefree way. This is the perfect film to sit and watch with your girlfriend, feeling relaxed and sexy together.

DVD : Caligula [1979] - Uncut Version (REGION 2) (PAL) [Dutch Import]
It's very rare to see a version of Caligula in this country above 90 minutes. This is the complete and uncensored version - a Dutch import, but it plays in English. This version does contain hardcore sex, sometimes carelessly inserted into the finished movie as it was. Young Italian director Tinto Brass's original vision was to be shattered, forcing him to withdraw his name from the movie. Producer Bob Guccione fired Brass for over-filming and running up huge costs from filming beyond what was financially acceptable. Guccione then took control of the film, and assisted by Giancarlo Lui later sneaked back onto the set and shot 6 minutes of hardcore sex which was later edited into the film. Lui re-cut, re-edited and changed parts of Gore Vidal's script to fashion what is ... Read More:

One of those DVDs that is not really entertaining, but nevertheless one which one is likely to view again. With the first viewing one is not likely to appreciate the photographic excellence (especially very intricate and difficult lighting techniques) because one is likely to be distracted by the dysfunctional storyline. After the third or fourth viewing one really comes to grips with the technical excellence of the product. I rate it 3-STARS => 1 star for erotic entertainment, but 4 starts for photographic and camera techniques.

In fact this is the only film of Tinto Brass that I have been able to obtain with English subtitles, leaving the original soundtrack intact. All the others I have seen were completely ruined, as usual, by the clumsy dubbing by the same old dubbing studio and the same old actors. They have also ruined hundreds of other films and TV series and should have been put out of business decades ago.

The well known English actor Frank Finlay in the main male part appears with his own voice.

Although there is, strictly speaking, really no single 'great erotic scene' in the film, there are a great many very well handled 'candid' erotic scenes generously distributed throughout the entire film and the cumulative effect is truly joyous. This film shares the same life ... Read More:

'Helen Mirren wanders through the whole thing looking aloof and rather bored. In the making of documentary she gets the best line describing the film: "It's an interesting mix of Art and genitals" and then gives the perfect smirk to camera." Sullivat

'Caligula' recounts the real life of the Roman emperor Gaius Caesar, known as Caligula, Malcolm McDowell. He ruled from 37-41 A.D. Caligula is believed by historians to have gone mad shortly after assuming office. He wasted his resources on public shows; exiled or murdered most of his family; enjoyed watching people tortured and killed while he ate dinner; made his pet race horse a consul; proclaimed himself a god; and had temples built in his honor. He was also the man who was murdered by his own guard. Good ... Read More:

...you like poorly acted, badly dubbed, humourless, storyless excuses for directors to live out their sad parody of male sexual fantasy. It lacks the creativity to be an 'art film' and the explicitness to be pornography. Avoid it at all costs!
