A fantastic movie. It's nearly the first time, that our hero Sharpe shows his emotion open to every one. ...

A typical example of staying around too long, same old plots but with a much older Sean Bean.
It really must be time for him to give up before what was a brilliant character becomes a joke.

I love Sharpe and Harper. But face it, they're ten years older than in the earlier films. It's doing them a bad turn to pretend otherwise and not to craft the script around that fact. The authors string stereotyped situations with stereotyped villains and bland good guys, a lumpy heroin and a boring femme fatale. Only the enthusiasm of the Indian extras brought some life into it.

DVD : Sharpe - The Complete Series (15 Disc Box Set) [1993]
Being a huge fan of the books, I was sceptical about the films. Sharpe in the books is massive, scar on the face and black hair, with Harper even bigger. However after half the first movie, these issues were soon forgotten. The first movies you can tell were lower budget and not quite up to the standard of the others, but with good acting they got away with it. After the first 2, you see the budget increasing, and with this and a marvellous Hakeswill I really felt a whole new dimension to the novels. Especially at the new price, I highly recommend this series!

Please note that this DOES NOT include Sharpe's Challenge. Despite being informed previously, Amazon continue to advertise that it does. There are several other suppliers advertising the same - perhaps they are all getting their text from the same place. But I can confirm 100% that the Amazon description is incorrect and that Sharpe's Challenge IS NOT INCLUDED. Score is based on site listing not the product.

Mcvicar was a grammar schooled lad who went astray and ended up doing some of the most vicious bank jobs in the time of the "supercrooks" the krays, richardsons, the great train robbers et-ol john mcvicar wrote the script for this exellent film himself and his book (by himself) also spawned the idea of the shawshank redemption for stephen king. this film is a great look at to how mcvicar was locked up in durham goal in the sixties, he wouldn't accept been locked away so planned his escape with the help of wally (adam faith) along with some quality acting (berkoff) and (faith) roger daltrey really captures the part of the no-nonsense john mcvicar right from the start with the now legendry line "alright who's got my trainers" then the "i aint going anywhere ... Great stuff. A shameless world of birds, shooters, guvnors and cars like your dad drove..

This is how the Bill used to be before they adopted soap-opera style plots and policemen and women who look like catalogue models. The Sweeney movies are a wonderful mix of vicious villains and grumpy, randy, chain smoking, drink-driving policemen. Yes the clothes and decor are hilarious (check out Carter's migraine-inducing bathroom wallpaper in the 1st movie)but they are absorbing, exciting thrillers. Sweeney 2 is my favourite, as the action is offset by a surprising amount of humour. The bickering, occasionally bumbling policemen ( the brewery stake-out is hysterical)and the running gags of Regan and the telephonist and his frustration with his new driver make the characters ... I had not read any of Sharpe's books before watching the series. However, I love British TV drama and novel adaptations, and I love the period in which Sharpe's adventures are set, so after reading the reviews in Amazon.co.uk, I decided to give it a try. And now I'm hopelessly hooked! All the actors' performances are wonderful, but Sean Bean's is simply stunning. The story is very respectful to the people who lived in Spain in those times, both those who were for and against the French (I'm Spanish. I know), and it is even respectful to the French enemy. The plot is a mixture of adventure and spy story, with quite a bit of criticism of the British class system thrown in.This is as good as a historical novel can be (and I've read quite a few)especially because of the feeling you get ... There is not a lot to say about the Sweeney. It's a classic and reviewing the Sweeney would be like reviewing Shakespeare. Let's focus on the DVD instead. The episodes are lovingly restored and the best picture quality I have seen in a 70s TV series re-release. Sound is also very good. The bonus materials are excellent: there are documentaries but also episodes of other series like Redcaps, Special Branch and Strangfe Report. Apart from that you get lots of interviews and promotionsal materials from the 70s. Absolutely one of the best edited box sets ever!
