All the reviews here are of the movie. They could apply to the VHS tape as easily as the DVD. What about the DVD? Are the video and audio quality better than a VHS tape? Is it good enough to justify paying to ship the DVD outside of the UK to replace a tape (since it is not available here on DVD)?

Update: I took a chance and ordered the DVD. The video and audio quality are certainly better than a VHS tape, but it is also hardly up to current standards for DVD. The audio is only stereo. A 5.1 audio mix would have made the atmospheric sound and the excellent music score even more vivid. Amazon.uk describes the video as 4:3 aspect ratio, which is technically correct, but what the disc actually presents is the 2.35:1 original ... Read More:

I LOVE this movie- I was lucky enough to see the film when it first came out as a kid. Full uncut. Before it was added to the Banned list in the U.K and taken off the shelves. I have enjoyed it ever since- It is better than most of the Friday the 13th series if not all (personal opinion of course). The story is excellent- (remember this was still quite original at the time) 1981!! and the acting is top notch. The opening burning scene is cool as the caretaker already looks creepy without being burnt, then when he is released from hospital after failed surgery months later,(see pic to right!--->) the gore starts- Tom Savini's (surely i don't need to introduce him?!) FX work on this film is some of his best, and the scissors pushed into the prostitutes stomach ... Read More:

DVD : Riddle Of The Sands [1979]
Thanks to Royal Navy might, Britain was living in `splendid isolation' throughout the 19th Century, unthreatened by and therefore wholly unconcerned with anybody else, lest it interrupt Lloyds, tiffin' and Ascot. Prussia and several other German states managed to beat mighty France within a few months in 1870 and achieve unification. As a land empire Imperial Germany was respected and admired - that is, until Kaiser Bill started building a navy.

At the time of publication Erskine Childers' THE RIDDLE OF THE SANDS (1903) was but one of many so-called `invasion novels' predicting a war with, usually, Germany and calling for British preparedness. However, such is its popularity that it has remained in print ever since. Back then it was one of the first spy ... Read More:

6.Split Second starring: Rutger Hauer, Kim Cattrall, Alastair Duncan, Michael J. Pollard, Alun Armstrong

DVD : Split Second
A truly dire film which only serves to illustrate how willing Rutger was to squander the chances afforded him after Blade Runner. Save for one electrifying scene in an abandoned Tube carriage (you might think that sequence was directed by an entirely different person to the rest of the film - I couldn't possibly comment) the remainder of this abortion is unmitigated and derivative trash.

...Rutger Hauer plays a seriously on-the-edge cop who lives on coffee and chocolate (and BIG guns). Having had one partner disappear while searching for a grisly serial murderer who then vanished, he is given as a replacement one Dick Durkin when the murders start again 12 months later.

Dick is a clean living ex-college graduate who runs every morning, and then has sex with his girlfriend, (except Sunday, when he skips the run!)

Hauer's character was clawed by the killer, and this has created a link, where Hauer can 'sense' when and where the next murder is going to happen. It is this that has put him on the edge, and made him a laughing stock amongst fellow officers.

There are some great scenes, especially the 'conversion' of Dirkin to Hauer's point ... Read More:
