I saw the original series when quite in my teens and have seen many, many documentaries since on many aspects of popular music. So is this worth buying? The answer has to be a resounding yes: the original film material and the range of authorities Tony Palmer gathered together for this mammoth 70s project mean that it remains a vivid, and unmatched, account of the genres which coalesced into rock.

And it's not just the big name experts who contributed the scripts which Palmer used as his starting point- you get the likes of Hoagy Carmichael and Irving Caesar talking about their own songs, and there's even a turn from Phil Spector (who appears to be singing his hits in the style of Bob Dylan).

This film is worth watching from many perspectives. The life of Vaughan Williams is portrayed in a balanced way, the excerpts from his music are beautifully played and presented, the interviews are excellent and informative. Interesting narrative and a great subject all make this a film for all abilities and backgrounds, from the lay person to the professional musician.

THe image: Wagner waves his baton and it ghosts across the screen like a cheap 1970s Top of the Pops effect...someone turns his head and his face turns to mush...daylight streams through a window and bleaches the screen like a pissedup cleaning woman...
Sound: the reviewers are right, friends and neighbours, some of the dialogue is out of synch with the mouths, and if you like Wagner's music, get a cd.

Great character actors make Wagner well worth seeing. Arthur Lowe has a wonderful 5 minute scene with Burton. Vanessa Redgrave is a cherished British icon, or should be. Richard Burton is so accomplished that he could stroll through a role with his eyes closed and still turn in a good performance, and so he does. He doesn't speak his dialogue, mark you, he ... Indeed, as my fellow reviewer's agree, an incredible snapshot of how we were in 1968, and hat's off, still, to Tony Palmer for capturing the images which are wonderful for any young person studying our musical heritage, and indeed, for us to look back upon.
Although Patrick Allen (RIP) was THE 'in' voice-over man of the time, both this and Cream's 'Farewell Concert' have unfortunately been marred by his observations. Fair play, he may well have just been reading someone else's words from a script, but even when 'All My Loving' was originally broadcast, Allen's commentary gives the impression, but only during Cream's fiesty live clip from 'We're Going Wrong' that WE AS A GENERATION were going / had gone wrong. This was most objectionable at the time, and as a survivor from ... Read More:

I read the "A musical and visual treat" review given above and thought I would give this a go. I missed the minor comment about "modern". Be warned. Much of this film is set in the modern era, where the lead actor (plays King Charles in the ancient parts) rants like a drunken Shakespearean actor on stage. A pompous buffoon.
The bits set in Purcell's time are excellent - but they occupy only 60% (guesstimate) of the film. I was just getting into the Stuart atmospehere, and suddenly we are back in the modern world. One just gets into this -and whoops- you're back in the Stuart times again. Really irritating.
The music is an eye-opener - watch out for when the total musical output of Purcell is given; truly prodigous. His lack of general recognition is a shame on us all.

This is Tony Palmer's short film of Fairport Convention which was made for cinema release. It features the only known contemporary footage of the "Full House" lineup of Thompson, Swarbrick, Pegg, Mattacks and Nicol who play five numbers. These are Various Jigs & Reels, Sir Patrick Spens, Now Be Thankful, Flatback Caper and Jenny's Chickens & The Mason's Apron, which were recorded live on the 5th June 1970 at the Maidstone Fiesta.

The film also features two numbers from Matthews Southern Comfort, My Front Pages and Southern Comfort, which are inserted after track three by Fairport. I think these two tracks were probably recorded elsewhere, although that's not made clear. The two bands are introduced by none other than John Peel - voiceover only.

Anyone expecting a literal retelling of tales from Solomon Volkov's book "Testimony" is going to be disappointed and bewildered by Tony Palmer's cinematic account, for this is more a 150-minute metaphor and music video than narrative of the life and times of DSCH.

Make no mistake, this is a stunning piece of cinema verite, an art form described in one place as, "A form of entertainment that enacts a story by sound and a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement." The scenes in this film comprise all the important moments of Shostakovich's life -- his student years in academy with Glazunov, the success of his student Symphony No. 1, his fear after Stalin's denigration of Lady McBeth of Minsk, his friendships with Tukaschevsky and Meyerhold, the make-good symphony ...
