A truly superb film, but this still isn't the full version and is the same cut as the inexcusable BFI release. The full version (a different cut) has been shown on several occasions by BBC2 so why could this not be sourced for the DVD?
Missing, is an extension of the early wedding scene losing a metaphorical song: "Gaily goes the ship when the wind blows fair' and a later night scene where Raglan is almost shot by a picket.
Greatest loss though, is the scene where Nolan and Morris thoughtlessly rob three NCO's of their breakfasts, particularly Norman Rossington's character who has previously suffered a flogging and demotion out of loyalty to Nolan.
This was a major film in its day and I recall much publicity and a 'making ... Read More:

Laurence Olivier stars as a sleazy, third-rate music hall performer in 1960's "The Entertainer", one of the first and best films of the so called Free Cinema movement, and a movie that is somewhat neglected today (it should be better known). Based on a play by John Osborne, Olivier plays Archie Rice, a mediocre performer in grim seaside town theaters. His shows attract few people (early in the film, we see passersby sneering at the theater marquee that falsely advertises Archie as a television comedian). His father, Billy, was once a talented and successful comedian, but now he is just a cranky old man living with him and Archie's wife, the unstable Phoebe. Archie has three grown children, played respectively by Alan Bates, Albert Finney and Joan ... Read More:

DVD : Look Back in Anger [1958] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The play uses the metaphor of describing english working classes as bears for men and squirrels for women ,it even shows them as fluffy toys and mary ure and burton enact the 2 animals very animatedly ,which is very overdone but interesting as this whole movie is an exercise in a mock protest rather than reality.

It is a very condescending view of the english marriage and character ,at times contemptible of it's characters which rather translates to a selfish love of the same low-lifes as the script evolves .

You will hear the Jazz score and the trumpet blaring angrily but nothing will prepare you for the very entertaining venomous outbursts by burton -who is a candy stall keeper in a market.

He talks like Bernard Shaw ... Read More:

DVD : Tom Jones [1963]
As one of the greatest British films ever made, Tony Richardson's adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic Tom Jones is long overdue for a full and proper restoration. Shortly before his tragic death from AIDS in 1991, Richardson presided over a personal restoration which included a brand new stereo soundtrack. However, this appeared to be the only real improvement, as the film itself remained the brutally cut TV version that had been around for years. In contrast, MGM's current DVD release is easily the best print of this film available, and technically way in advance of previous video releases and TV airings. Beautifully bright, steady, and well defined with good colour saturation, this digital transfer is an absolute joy to watch, and as far as I can see completely uncut. ... Read More:

DVD : The Charge Of The Light Brigade [1968]
Even in its abused, neglected state (hence the four-star rating instead of five) Richardson's "Charge of the Light Brigade" is still a fantastic piece of cinema and a sadly overlooked classic in the same league as the wonderful "Oh, What a Lovely War". At a time when most modern young British directors regularly churn out terrible mockney gangster flicks, wet rom-coms or stagnant period dross it seems such a shame that this bold example of British cinema should suffer such a fate. Sir David Puttnam even recently stated how extremely angry he was that Light Brigade remains completely ignored as the quality piece of cinematic art that it obviously is.

Richardson himself had planned this film as his masterpiece but became so disillusioned with the reaction to his work that ... Read More:
