If you are looking for amazing special effects, then this isn't the one for you. Unsurprisingly, throught the film there is an intense feeling of a tight budget. However, with the performances inside, it hardly matters.

I had the fortune to see this while it was at the New London Theatre. None of the magic created by the actors is lost in the film - Romola Garai (Cordelia) is stunning, Frances Barber (Goneril) is absolutely wonderful with perfect timing and a voice to match, Monica Dolan and William Gaunt (Regan and Gloucester) are brilliant, but the shining lights are Sylvester McCoy and Ian McKellen, as the Fool and Lear. McCoy plays a hilarious, spoon-playing fool, and there is a great sympathy towards the character, making his ... Read More:

I love this film! Shakespeare converted well into film form is a delight (see Branagh's 'Much Ado' as well) and this film is excellent.
All the characters are note perfect, and there is not a single weak performance amongst them.
Although some scenes are swapped around or merged, that helps to show the cohesion of the plot strands and works extremely well.
Characters have a dark as well as a light side; Sir Toby is a classic funny drunk, but he's also a man who is exploiting Sir Andrew for his money and keeping Maria at arm's length. Mel Smith is absolutely brilliant in the role.
Feste the Clown is a much more tragic figure than the only usually portrayed; a man with a deep melancholy, driven back to Olivia's house for lack ... Read More:

DVD turned up within 24 hours - well done Amazon and Royal Mail.

As with other reviews here, the quality of the acting can't be faulted. So I'll review with from a different perspective...

It is entirely filmed on a set, there are outdoor scenes in the play but they are all filmed in doors, so it feels a little dark and claustrophobic.

Unfortunatley, the picture quality is more like watching a video tape, not what DVD can offer. I know the material is from 1990, but it's not the dark ages. The picture is washed out somewhat, there is fringing on the images and it is a bit grainy at times. Metrodome could have spent some time post-processing the print to bring out more colour and contrast at least.

I'll be interested to compare ... Read More:

I brought this DVD 2 days ago & have to say it is brilliant.

The cast are amazing & play there parts very well.

Julie Walters deserves an ocar she is a national treasure.

For those who have seen her as the mild mannered Mrs Weasley in the Harry Potter films be warned your in for a shock when she sings "macaroons"
a delightful song about biscuits with a rude line about Ozzy Osbourne.

Almost 3 hours of pure fun.

Well worth the money I paid for it.

this is the best adaptation of one of Dickens' classics that I have ever seen. I saw it once on t.v. in the United States and have never been able to find it since then. When a production can grab & keep your interest while losing nothing, it is quite a feat. I just wish something like this was around when I had to read David Copperfield!

If you want to get to know the Gershwins' 'Porgy and Bess', this is a brilliant version to watch.

Willard White is just incredible, and of course Gershwin's music throughout is just sublime. Seeing 'Summertime' (you know the one) in the context of the show sheds a completely different light on it.

The only annoyance was the poor miming (mouths and voices out of synch), and for me it was a big annoyance. But I still found myself moved from time to time.

This is a first class production which outshines even the BBC version. Henry Goodman is an outstanding Shylock:a dignified, rounded human being, insisting on his pound of flesh almost against his will. I liked the small but significant touch of Tubal's silent rejection of Shylock in the trial scene and the fact that Balthasar really did look different from Portia - for once Bassanio can be forgiven for not recognising him/her. But it is a pity the return of the rings did not have a lighter touch: a little comic relief is needed by now. There was a lack of humour in the casket scenes, too but all criticism fades with the memory of Goodman's performance.
