'The King and I' is a much-loved family classic because it combines catchy songs with lush sets and an endearing, entertaining storyline. Like many musicals, it is overlong (I feel that musicals work best at about a 100 minute run time) and over-the-top, but it is wonderful escapism that the whole family can enjoy.

Yul Brynner won an Oscar for his turn as the King Of Siam, and he is very good in the role. English-rose Deborah Kerr plays her usual English rose role, as the live-in-governess to the King Of Siam's many, many children. Her Anna is a lovely, steadying presence to the theatrics of many other cast members (including Brynner). Kerr did play a lot of variations on the same role, but her acting talent gives each performance ... Read More:

I'm not commenting on the film's quality. (I strongly suspect that everybody reading these reviews already holds Temple to be both adorable and a great actor.) What I would like to point out is that DVD capacity is totally wasted in this product. It should not be described as "main language English", but as "ONLY language English". There are no other dialogue tracks, and it lacks all subtitling, even in English. So forget about any other bells and whistles.
Perhaps I was spoiled by previous DVD purchases, which all included them. Perhaps nobody else would imagine that they would be included, at this price. But, since I would have appreciated being forewarned, here goes my warning to others!

.
It's vibrant, showy and over the top, corny and American musical filming at it's best. There is no-one to compare to Ethel Merman at belting out a song and grabbing at the heart strings.
.The cast may not all be the greatest of singers but,boy they can sell a song. The tale does not hold any surprises but it carries you along just the same.Love this film, just the thing for a rainy afternoon !

Although Amazon only describes this version as the 1945 film of State Fair, which is on disc 1, the 'special features' disc contains the 1962 film in its entirety, with the commentary from Pat Boone as stated (though there are sometimes long gaps in this). I just thought that I should make this clear as it is not obvious in the description.

As for the films, well I find that I like both versions for different reasons and cannot decide between them. If you want to compare the two versions then this two disc special edition is definitely the one to buy, as all other releases just contain the 1945 film. Although I find this musical slightly more lighthearted than some of the others by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the songs and music are beautiful ... Read More:

I'm prejudiced about this film, because I saw it as a small child, and was absolutely enchanted. From a child's viewpoint, everything looked magical. I especially loved the fairy, Light, and the Land of the Unborn Children. As a grownup, I can appreciate the slightly tacky, not to mention low-budget, nature of the costumes and settings, but I don't care. I still love it!!!

For one thing, the color has been restored beautifully; for another, Shirley Temple's terminal cuteness was finally curbed by a competent director, Walter Lang. Every curl still remains in place, but she puts in a more than creditable performance as the spoiled brat, Mytyl. The little boy playing her brother Tyltyl is also engaging, as are Sibyl Jason, and Juanita Quigley ... Read More:
