DVD : Laurel & Hardy Volume 13 - Sons of the Desert/Related Shorts [1934]
Sons of the Desert is the best feature length L&H film you can buy.
Right from the beginning Stan has grave doubts about being a member of the 'Sons of the Desert' - "well the exhausted ruler said..." and is equally worried about whether his wife will let him attend the convention "if I didn't ask her I wouldn't know what she wanted me to do".

This film has many great set pieces, of which perhaps my favourite is their complete inability to get into the right house. They live next to each other in 2220 and 2222:
Stan attempts to get into Ollies house.
Stan shuts Ollie out of his own house.
Stan is locked out of his own house.

All this drives Mrs Hardy wild, and to make matters worse Stan starts ... Read More:

I'm not commenting on the film's quality. (I strongly suspect that everybody reading these reviews already holds Temple to be both adorable and a great actor.) What I would like to point out is that DVD capacity is totally wasted in this product. It should not be described as "main language English", but as "ONLY language English". There are no other dialogue tracks, and it lacks all subtitling, even in English. So forget about any other bells and whistles.
Perhaps I was spoiled by previous DVD purchases, which all included them. Perhaps nobody else would imagine that they would be included, at this price. But, since I would have appreciated being forewarned, here goes my warning to others!

In 'Gilda' and 'Affair in Trinidad', Rita Hayworth performs dance routines which are not the kind of routines found in movie musicals. The routines in 'Gilda' and 'Trinidad' give the impression that Hayworth is a musical and rhythmical person who is responding naturally to the music but is not a dancer. These routines work very well as Rita is a great mover but if anyone is in any doubt about her talent as a dancer then watch 'You Were Never Lovelier' - she is a sheer delight to watch. She is a fabulous dancer and a wonderful partner for Fred Astaire. 'The Shorty George', a tap routine, is my favourite next to Astaire's wonderful solo number.

This film has a silly, nonsensical storyline but this is part of its charm. The characters ... Read More:
