Wim Wenders exposes the human frailty in all of us. Through an Angelic perspective of Berlin he paints a beautifully profound, poetic and intimate picture of the human psyche. It leaves images in the mind that will have a memorable and positive effect. It is beautifully filmed and ranks as one of the most profound films of the 20th Century. One to be cherished and enjoyed.

Made in 1973 (not '74 as they all say!) this is classic Wim Wenders - a black and white road movie, with the main character (Vogler) adrift and without much purpose, in a world of sleazy hotels, roadside eatieries, 70s music and Americana. Quite a bit of Americana - it all starts in the US, where Vogler is supposed to write a story about being on the road in America. But all he does is take lots of polaroids and scribble notes; so he misses his deadline, runs out of money, and has to fly back to Germany. Because of a strike there are no flights, and while booking flight to Amsterdam he meets 9-year old Alice and her mother; he helps them out with the language, and before you know it the mother has left Alice in his care, and they'll hook up later ... As time goes by, nothing much happens - in wide, leisurely landscapes, from the Elbe flowing broad across its water meadows, to the border with the old DDR, East Germany. In black and white, which feels just right - as much of this movie does. Nothing much, but not nothing, because otherwise it would be dull; there are strong tensions between the two protagonists at times. Two very different people, drifting together, not particularly getting on. "I don't want to hear your story" says the one, "I want to know who you are." "I am my story."

Wenders has his way of getting to the core, and to your heart, in a few spare shots.
The soundtrack is also spare, is only there part of the time, and reminds (pre-minds?) me of the Ry Cooder ... Read More:

Possibly the best dvd release so far of the gorgeous Paris, Texas. The 16:9 anamorphic picture looks great on a widescreen TV. Theres a directors commentary, deleted scenes also with a commentary, home movies and Cannes film festival footage. So a sizeable and strong extras package. There's also a gorgeous 24 booklet include printed on heaystock paper throughout - it's really well designed with good photos and (previously printed) articles. There's even a Sam Shepherd short story! It does say the booklet is limited edition and is well worth having so do make note! An excellant releae from Axiom Films who'll I'll be keeping an eye out for!

This is the one to get (with a suitcase on the cover). All the others are a mess to a greater or lesser extent. This is the only decent long cut available and it isn't even expensive! A huge film spread across three discs, it's obviously one for a long winter evening...

The 1970s German New Wave is certainly flourishing in the DVD era. First the comprehensive Herzog collection in 2 great value box-sets, then the incredible flood of Fassbinder box sets. Now it's Wim Wenders' turn - his 6 best films in a uniform edition from the Axiom label overseen by Wenders himself - new prints & subtitles, excellent packaging & booklets, plus director commentaries & various little extras.
I imagine many will go for PARIS TEXAS or WINGS OF DESIRE - Wenders' 2 big international hits. But I also imagine there are many who think of Wenders as one of those directors who rather lost his way and whose best work was the early 'ALICE-WRONG-KINGS' road movie trilogy.
The classic ALICE IN THE CITIES is firmly in gritty ... Read More:

DVD : Beyond the Clouds [1997]
The first time I watched this film I was slightly bored - couldn't understand what was being said or why. However, having watched it again recently I took each 'story' at face value and found myself thoroughly enjoying the beautiful camera work and actually making some sense of what the film was about and the various themes at play.

if you're not interested in watching films about the genesis of ideas, this is definitely not for you, but if you just want to sit back and watch a couple of hours of beautiful film making, I would reccomend it.

DVD : The American Friend [1977]
THE AMERICAN FRIEND is a clever film, but one that perhaps suffers from a being a little too smart for its own good. As an exploration of the cultural colonisation of Germany it is very effective, and WIM WENDERS fills the subtext of his film with a pessimistic tone that borders on paranoia, a redolent theme for a film of the 1970's. He depicts a featureless and grey Europe that is bending under the unbearable yolk of capitalism. A continent that has had its originality squeezed out of it by the duplicitous behaviour of people like Tom Ripley. A land of commerce and greed, rather than art. In fact art becomes the metaphorical device for the insidiousness of a consumer driven society, with both painting and the cinema acting as its agents. Of all European ... Read More:
