I have a problem with these 'dancing on air' martial arts films, a-la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: they look daft. Once you've seen one guy on a wire you've seen them all. Once you've seen a guy stamping his feet forty feet up a bamboo tree you say `Oh, look, a bird'. The only place where these effects have ever seemed anything other than laughable is in The Matrix: because it isn't a real world environment. There you can make allowances. Hero has lots of stylish fighting, but if you can't take it seriously, what's the point? An exercise in futility.
Hero is additionally befuddled by the message it attempts to impart: totalitarian societies are okay because although they are born in bloodshed they lead to a united, peaceful society. ... Read More:

It is sad. Those beautiful landscapes are there, of course, the plot is fair enough, but this movie shows clearly that ain't enough to entertain you.

It is like a tv series production with a boost up for big screen purpose. Still not refined! The walls of the palace, the makeup, the expressions in those faces are so fake that they just don't let you get into the story, which scatters away all the magic of a rather good marketing idea.

My best advice, keep it tight with Hero and Tiger-Dragon, let this movie be forgotten.

Having watched Flying Daggers again a few weeks ago on DVD for the first time since switching over to HD, I found myself noticing how awful the picture looked so given that the film itself is excellent I though it would warrant upgrading to Blu. Given the quality of the other BD's in my collection I was disappointed by the transfer they've done on this title. It just doesn't look HD. It maybe an older title but given what the studios managed with, say The Shining, the same effort hasn't been put in here.

To someone who doesn't already own it on DVD, I totally recommend it but if you do already own it I'll say don't bother with the upgrade unfortunately.

A beautifully filmed story of exquisite tenderness.

Starting off in black and white, a student comes home to his grieving, aged mother and to bury his father who has died outside the village in which he was the teacher. The mother wants to have the body carried home although the son and the mayor of the village prefer to have the body brought in a vehicle. The story then moves into the past and transitions into colour showing how the mother, as a young and extraordinarily pretty but shy 18 year old girl, meets the teacher on his first arrival in the village.

I guess you would call it love at first sight, as she contrives to be close to him, walking past the school each day, standing by the road as he walks home, taking water from a well ... Read More:

DVD : Not One Less [1999]
Somewhat didactic and sentimental, this film from Zhang Yimou is nevertheless irresistible. An unusual foray from Zhang into realistic films, Not One Less tells the tale of a young teenager in a Chinese village who is named as substitute teacher in the local school when the head teacher has to visit his ailing mother. Her skills as a teacher are barely adequate, and her students are just a few years younger than she is, yet she makes up her obvious shortcomings as a teacher with an utmost zeal in accomplishing her mission. Her superior has told her that not one of her students must drop out of school, so when one of the more trouble making boys heads to the big city in order to support his starving family, she has to go there to get him back. The movie is refreshingly ... Read More:

Can inevitable and hopeless sadness ever be adequately described? Maybe, but not, I think, by amateur film enthusiasts or any but a few professional critics, and only then if they can tame their professional enthusiasms, can write well and know when to stop. That leaves out, among us amateurs, nearly all of us. As for the professionals, I've read only two or three commentaries by professional film critics that I think do justice to Raise the Red Lantern. Partly, this is due to the utterly foreign, cloistered culture we're observing. Partly, it's due to the intense but withheld emotions and motivations we gradually become aware of. Mainly, I think, it's due to the fact that deep sadness simply can't be adequately described, and the more we try, the less we convey.

this is another great film in the mould of the road home and not one less, beutifully filmed and a wonderfull touching tale.
this side of zhang yimou,s film making although not as commercial as hero or flying daggers is the true testament to his talents as a storyteller.
so dont expect an action movie just a great film and well worth buying. mark

There are few films that make a real impact on the filming industry, but this is one for the ages, the first things youll notice about this film is the stunning use of colour, in the brothel, Bamboo Grove, Forest and Fields. All the destinations used in the film,(Mainly China and Ukraine) have a real spiritual feel to them, and whats more is that there are fight scenes in each place, with one on one bloodbaths, vicious soldier ambushes, deadly traps and bamboo spears and a classic battle between 2 of the main characters with the use of instruments, machetes, chinese swords, and oddly enough, sleeves. But its not just the fighting and choreography that make this a spectacle, there is a brutally deep storyline with sensational plot twists that you just couldnt see coming.

Even the muscial ... Read More:
