Although everyone probably best remembers Gerry Anderson for "Thunderbirds", "Captain Scarlet" is considerably superior. Both the effects and the puppets are more realistic, and the the writing has a stronger darker edge. The shows were back to 30 mins, which kept the pace up, where "Thunderbirds" could begin to drag by that point. After this, there were "Joe 90 and "The Secret Service", but neither show had that dark element, which only reappeared with the first live action Century 21 series, the excellent "UFO". As for the DVD set, there are lots of goodies and extras which I was pleasantly surprised to find, and the image quality is clear and sharp. I just have two gripes, hence the 4 stars. Firstly, ... That NEW CAPTAIN SCARLET flounders in virtual obscurity while the embarassingly juvenile & camp nonesense of the new DR WHO is heaped with accolades is just so frustrating! The work that's gone into making it so good deserves far better than the treatment it received, and that the show is now officially 'dead' after just 26 stunning episodes leaves me rather bitter. Season 2 of this ground-breaking series really does improve on the already excellent first batch of episodes: The animation has been polished for a start, with better lighting effects and softening of edges to make things seem more 'real', while the scripts continue to grow in maturity and concept. Gerry Anderson shows have always been special. Although most were made with only puppets and models, they had the same production values of acting, camerawork, music etc that a live action production would enjoy. This helps the viewer immerse themselves in the fictional world and the drama becomes more believable, even if it's just puppets. That's the secret of good engaging storytelling. It was amusing to see Thunderbirds wipe the floor with imported US shows in 1992 when the BBC screened it. So what's the new Captain Scarlet like?. In short, brilliant. This first set of Captain Scarlet features 6 episodes. If like me you first watched these as a kid, probably in black and white, it is marvellous to see them now in remastered colour with 5.1 sound. The picture quality is really very good. Although I have always preferred Thunderbirds, I have grown to love Captain Scarlet over the years. Its a darker series overall. To this day I still love the spooky opening credit sequence with the cat screeching, and Captain Scarlet in the alleyway being shot and then pulling his own gun. Although there aren't that many extras there is a an interesting commentary from Gerry Anderson on the first episode. I've got vol 1,2 and 5 and intend to get the rest!
