Its not surprising that Madam Butterfly has remained to this day one of the most popular operas in the Operatic Repertoire. For the music and the story is timeless. It is very emotive, full of love and tenderness, and also very tragic. This version succeeds admirably in more ways than one. Rather than being stagebound, it is filmed on location (in Tunisia of all places!) and does manage to convey to the viewer the feeling of being in Japan with its wonderful sets, and location shots of the sea and the surrounding landscape to give this production that cinematic feel which works wonderfully well.

The singing by both tenor and soprano in the lead roles is a delight. Mind you, I have been spoiled by the wonderful Pavarotti/Freni version ... Read More:

Musically very, very good. Howver, if all I wanted was the sound I'd have bought a cd instead.
The stage performances are good, but the whole thing is marred by at intervals the view suddenly flashing with no warning from the stage to a rehearsal room with the singers out of costume & orchestra in shirtsleeves (without a break in the music!).
At the opera, whether in the operahouse or watching a dvd I want to watch the story being performed and sung while "suspending disbelief" and almost "living the story" as it were.

Luciano Pavarotti at his absolute best, which is truly something to hear. Renata Scotto may not be everyone's ideal Mimi- she looks too much the sturdy healthy sort of girl, and her acting is terrible, but this is quibbling. For those who remember only the later, concert Pavarotti, or for those who have been disappointed with his acting in other things, this is the one to watch to see what all the fuss is about.
I would recommend skipping the Tony Randall [?] intro, its a bit cringe-worthy.

Visually, this is a real feast! However, there is much to be desired musically. Behrens is slightly coy, and her voice is not rich enough for the part: she is so much better suited to Strauss and Wagner. MacNeil is great - really menacing - but at 63 years of age, his sense of pitch fails unless he is following an orchestral line. Domingo's strengths as Cavaradossi are well known, and he does not let us down here. The conducting is exemplary, the orchestra magnificent. I very much enjoyed watching the video - I had had it for years, and never given it a viewing. But in the final analysis, I feel a younger, surer Scarpia and a more Italianate Floria are needed.

Eva Marton is wonderful in the title role, both in acting and singing. Particulary in act 2 scene 2, where she subtly conveys the reactions she recalls in act 3. Watch her face when Calaf tries to kiss the hem of her robe. Placido Domingo is also effective, showing Calaf's arrogance and selfishness convincingly. Leona Mitchell is heartbreaking as Liu, her unrequited devotion shining through in her voice and acting.

The Mandarin makes the most of his moment, turning what is basically plot exposition into a rabble rousing speech designed to fire up the peasants while the Emperor is portrayed as being weighed down by guilt at allowing Turandot to make her terrible bargain.

The scenery is magnificent, from the crowded streets ... Read More:

At last the DVD I have waited so long for. 1983, Dimitrova was at the height of her substantial powers. This very traditional Verona Arena production has come up well on DVD, the sound far superior to the vhs version. At this time there were another two or three Turandots to see, so they would have you believe. Marton was excellent and she can be found from the Met or Vienna. Unfortunately Dimitrova was never filmed in the excellent Covent Garden production, they showed Gwyneth Jones but never released it on VHS or DVD...............
Good support from the rest of the cast and a fine Liu from Gasdia. Sadly Dimitrova is no longer with us and it is a shame we only have a small selection of what she achieved on stage. These days they turn up for the radio broadcast ... Read More:

It is the late 1800's. An American naval captain, Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton (Plácido Domingo) is stationed in Japan. As is tradition he has a girl in every port. That is except Japan. So he is matched up with a poverty stricken teen Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly (Mirella Freni.) Butterfly dumps her old religion (which infuriates her relatives) and clings to Pinkerton. Naturally the day will come when Pinkerton will need a proper American wife. So how does Cio-Cio react? (Puccini music at his best)

At first this looks like a 60's movie with voiceover. Placido looks a little like an Italian Hercules. But as time grows on you realize that they actually did a pretty good job of staging. There are plenty of implications that are not in the songs; so the story ... Read More:
