This is the opera that shot Georgiu to stardom. It's easy to see why, with her combination of acting, looks and singing. Violetta is a very difficult role, it places very different demands on the singer in each act. Georgiu isn't quite ideal for act 1, but after that she's really in her element. You can practically see the paternal pride in Solti's face as he watches his young protegee bloom. Surely the definitive Traviata.

Verdi's Aida comes thrillingly to life in this splendid production from the Metropolitan Opera. Aprile Millo is in excellent voice in the title role and sings with great musicality throughout. Indeed this sense of musical values being the most important is reflected in the fine performances of the rest of this all star cast most notably Placido Domingo and Dolora Zajick as Radames and Amneris respectively. The production is old fashioned but attractive and the physical acting is rudimentary but the vocal acting gets prizes all round.

This was a favourite performance for me on video and is now excellently transferred onto DVD (sub titles optional). First rate.

An absolutely fantastic production. Updated very cleverly. I don't, as a rule care for updated productions but this one is done outstandingly well
Stunning singing. Costumes spot on. Birnam woods moving to Dunsinane was very effective and the witches/crones.......
The three hours flew by.
My only quibbles were the interviews with conductor and soloists during intervals, distracted from the production.
And the blood, NY Met needs to contact Weta Studios Wgtn NZ for really realistic blood.

This is an orgy of garish colours and bad taste, which given the subject matter is perhaps not inappropriate. Certainly I think it has dated badly when compared with the less overpowering visual productions these days. Costumes and set are, in a word, lavish, and the filming does help you to follow what is going on. I thought the direction needlessly cut to close-ups of characters' faces, such as when one character is singing about another. My biggest gripe is that they missed the chance to make a truly moving ending by not having any fake blood on Edita Gruberovna (who sang brilliantly by the way, but doesn't look quite young enough for the part). So instead of enjoying the moving musical interplay between father and daughter, I was thinking ... Read More:

Verdi - La Traviata (Netrebko, Villazon, Rizzi) [2006]

No, the set does not have the glamour of the Met or Covent garden, but the acting and singing easily make up for that .... if you doubt my view, see the reviews for what is the same DVD except that it a 2 disc version (the 2nd disc is behind the scenes etc. for those who want it, otherwise, the same). Netrebko and Villason sing beautifully, which is confirmed by the standing ovation at the end of the Opera. Reviewers at the concert spoke of her (Netrebko's) 'bell-like purity of tone' and 'golden gleam of her voice'.

Worth buying then!? I would say definitely 'yes' but, not if you need to have a sumptious setting on the stage!?

This superb production is a stunning success. The entire cast sings and acts with total authority and conviction. Fleming sings beautifully (even if she does look a bit like she's walked straight out of an American soap opera), my only reservation is over James Morris, whose acting is a bit hammy (he should have made less use of his (very strange) eyebrows). Domingo overwhelms. Levine gives the music all the ferocious power it needs, with a fantastically disciplined Met orchestra. Sets and costumes strike an ideal balance between traditional and modern, sumptuous and understated. One tiny gripe - not every line in the opera is subtitled. There are some serious gaps in the subtitling. Overall verdict though: excellent - the five stars richly deserved. I cannot ... Read More:
