"It didn't fit any of the rules." Thus does Hans Sachs contemplate at his leisure the new song by Stolzing, which provides the autobiographical key to Wagner's great comic opera. This DVD features a performance of Otto Schenk's traditionalist 1993 production at the Met. The performance was filmed live in December 2001.

A beaming James Levine clearly enjoys himself in the orchestra pit as he commences the opening prelude, and that smile of joy is prevalent throughout the following 290 minutes. The glorious sound of his orchestra and the perfect phrasing are a joy to hear.

The cast are superb. James Morris as the hero Sachs is indescribably flawless; Thomas Allen is equally so as the prim and officious Beckmesser, and ... Read More:

NOT WANTING TO DENY THE MERITS OF MOST PARTS OF THIS RING ( SOME PARTS ARE HOWEVER REGRETABLE ) I BELIEVE THAT THE PRIORITY ISSUE IN DVD SHOULD BE THE MUNICH RING SUPERBLY CONDUCTED BY WOLFGANG SAWALLISCH AND AVAILABLE A FEW YEARS AGO IN VIDEO DISC.

My favourite performance of this work, not only on video but also musically. Jerusalem is in his prime (if only his later Siegfrieds and Tristans preserved the voice in this state), and Weikl is simply the greatest Amfortas -- an underrated baritone in his finest role, rising fully to the 3rd Act demands which Fischer-Dieskau and Van Dam so glaringly fail to meet. In all other respects it's more than acceptable, and the production, which I saw live, captures the unique atmosphere of the work and the venue.

I saw this production first on VHS Video - and still have all of them. I enjoyed it then, but spent most of the time looking at the translation and synopsis which came with it. I them saw it on television and was glued to it. I now have it on DVD - this version - and there is only one word I can say about it - wow! It is a mixture of modern with traditional and it works really well. It is very atmospheric and full marks go to the lighting and stage technicians. The use of lasers and smoke in 'Das Rheingold' were stunning to say the least. The depth of the acting and music was also outstanding. Although it has a modern flavour, it is easy to determine who is who. (Dare I say it - but this version is better than the recent version by the Royal Opera House!) There ... Read More:

When Chereau's production of this Ring was first seen, and Boulez's conducting first heard, there were howls of abuse in all directions. But sober reflection, as it so often does, mitigates some of the more extreme reactions of that time: the fact is that this is a marvellous Ring Cycle, superbly and luminously played, sung, and recorded. I found no problem with either the sound or the vision of my set: indeed although I don't have 5.1 sound, I do have the original CD sets of all the operas and it seems to me that the DVD sound here is now more spacious, even on normal stereo playback. McIntyre is a tower of strength, as he was at Covent Garden at the time; Jones is superb, not wobbly at all, and acts gloriously and looks stunning. In fact, there is hardly a ... Read More:

After watching Acts 1 and 2, I was forming the opinion that this was the finest DVD of a Wagner opera available. The production up to the end of Act 2 is faithful to the composer's wishes, and the performances are all excellent - Kollo's voice, I think, has the perfect tone colour to express the yearning of Tristan.
But there are two serious problems with Act 3:
1/ The singers are miming to what has been previously recorded. Why DG have chosen to go down this route for the final Act is beyond me - perhaps because of the difficulty of performing it. But it lends an unrealistic and unnnatural air to the performance. One of the reasons I buy opera on DVD is to see it being performed, not mimed. A singer's behaviour changes completely when he or she is miming. ... Read More:

This is the Ring how Wagner imagined it would/should be. Every stage shot and directorial decision follows what 'The Master' had in mind and wrote down. The director is Otto Schenk and 2009 marks the last time this landmark Ring Cycle will be shown at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Hopefully, it will be filmed in glorious HD!

Nonetheless, having this on 'ordinary' DVD still preserves what is a most enjoyable and watchable version. There are recordings of this out there that are simply unwatchable (Naxos/Lothar Zagrosek) and others that will challenge your mind (DG/Boulez) and are highly recommendable, but for wanting to know what Wagner had in his mind, this is the one.

Having said that, some of it looks very silly. The transformation of Alberich ... Read More:

This Tristan arrived with plenty of hype and is certainly about as good as one dare hope for in these times. The staging, although conceptual, is at least imaginative and visually striking without being completely foolish or haphazard. Yet,as is always the way with opera nowadays, there are annoying details, mannerisms, which will pall on repeated viewing.

Nina Stemme, it must be presumed, will blossom into the great Wagner soprano of this quarter of the new century. At the moment, her acting leaves a little to be desired. There is little sense of consuming passion, erotic love or transcendence in this performance. Her constant smirk during Marke's despair is truly painful to watch.

The tenor, Robert Gambill, looks impressively deranged in Act Three, somewhat ... Read More:
