DVD : Isle Of Wight Festival 1970 - Message To Love
I just received the dvd and though i agree that some of the clips were way too short, donavan's catch the wind amounted to about 10 seconds worth, the performances that were shown were amazing. the only bad thing about the whole dvd was the people outside the fence and the promoters who were yelling at them and sicking dogs on them, i have the woodstock and monterey pop videos and they were built on happiness and a peaceful environment for the most part except for a few disgruntled townspeople/these people were shameful and were a disgrace to those performers/i disagree with the comment that the doors and jimi were "on their way out", their voices were great, the songs were great, and jimi's guitar was amazing as usual. all in all if you pass ... 3.The Doors - Special Edition [1991] starring: Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, Kathleen Quinlan, Michael Wincott, Michael Madsen

DVD : The Doors - Special Edition [1991]
Stone deals in heroic archetypes and composite characters. He could be thinking of Janis and Hendrics as well. People that played for keeps, although no one's role model! His work is distinctively Oliveresque drama and in your face, and his sets are chaotic to everyone but the genius (conscious and subconscious) inside him. There's a lot to read in-between the lines, a lot of thought-history of the latter 20th when the mind was "breaking through to the other side". ANY other side! I once saw The Doors and was underwhelmed as Jim gave his drunken stylized insults just like in the movie. We all chanted "Led Zepellin!Led Zepellin!", the next act. No mayhem. The depressed band got the hook and the festival lit back up. These were magical times. Jim ... Read More:

Considering the amount of attention this album has got over the years, much of this is familiar but the detail is great, the band are all there (obviously minus the most important) and Beat poet Michael McClure among others provide insightful and entertaining moments. Not essential, but worth a watch for the true Doors fan.

Although all of the concert footage can be seen on other DVD's, the insight from the surviving members of the band make this film worth buying. The band members speak about individual songs and also build up each preformance with behind the scenes stories concerning each show. An excellent the Doors video.
The unique thing about this DVD is that you get to see the band change before your eyes. The first song recorded at a Canadian TV show type setting shows 'The Doors' doing probably the most outstanding version of "The End" ever put to audio/video ever. Even though the Oedipal section is eliminated it is absolutely mind blowing (To Say The Least). Morrison is steaming. This performance capture the bands pre 'Light My Fire' fame remarkably well. ... This DVD has the very real effect of making you wish you were in the audience experiencing the concert. Astbury is outstanding as Morrison, not performing some fancy dress impression of Jim but rather being seemingly possessed by him. Sure enough, Astbury's performance is superbly observed, his body language is well rehearsed and his voice is carved to perfection for the songs, but any lifelong Doors fan will spot the real power in his eyes. Those eyes, those fleeting moments when he looks into the audience, are very much Morrison's eyes. Although Astbury is performing his heart out in respectful tribute, you get the sense that Morrison is "in there" somewhere.

It's a shame that Densmore isn't on drums, but it is great to see Robby and Ray ... Read More:

Thanks for the helpful reviews! It seems that this is yet another attempt by some bunch of chancers to cash in on the Joy Division bandwagon! There is very little quality footage of them audio or video, outside of the main work that was published by Factory or was on Granada. There are some, but not many good clips on Youtube. One of my faves being of a gig they did in Altrincham at Bowdon Vale Youth Club...Honestly, its great! There are also some good quality vids of their sessions on "so it goes" etc. Why put your money into the grubby mitts of the parasites that threw this DVD together, when you can see better for free!
