First off as a DVD this is superb, the quality of picture and sound for something that was originally recorded in 1967 will blow you away, as will Jimi's unforgettable performance.
I've been a Hendrix music fan for a good while but I'd never actually seen him play a full set like you do on this DVD, I'd only ever seen brief clippings from documentaries etc before. Why?! Jimi at the Monterey is one of the best musical PERFORMANCES I've ever seen and anybody with even a passing interest in rock music (not just its history) should be forced to watch it, man if he played like that at every gig he played it's no wonder his rise to fame was so meteoric. Even now in 2008 I had to physically attach my lower jaw back to my face after watching the 'sacrifice', ... Read More:

Despite the hype, this was not Jimi's best concert: it had some great moments but in many places is rather shambolic. This is not surprising, as the Gypsy Sun and Rainbows was under-rehearsed.

The footage is OK, although it concentrates on Hendrix (of course).
Most of the Hendrix hits are there, along with new material like Mitch's `Beginnings' (aka Jam Back at the House, with composition credits going to Jimi) and 'Izabella'. The Star Spangled Banner and the instrumental which follows are the best things in the show.

The DVD is almost twice as long as the original VHS release and has much better sound. However, as with the video, the mix buries the other members of the band (second guitar and two percussionists) apart from ... Read More:

Well, most ardent fans would already own it by now, but if not then you need it. This may well be regarded as Jimi's Classic Album, probably for the guest musician credentials alone, but all the albums he recorded for Track Records could also be included. Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland were, for many fans, Jimi's finest, and this superb documentary gives you the nuts and bolts, the sadness and the tears and thankfully, Chas Chandler's and Noel Redding's input, as they have since passed on. For their time, those 3 albums were absolute classics for their immense imagination and musicianship, so this DVD chronicling Electric Ladyland will perhaps give some small insight into the making of the other 2.

It finally arrived. I've only watched disc 1 so far - but it was worth the wait. Opening with " If you're going to San Francisco" the memories of that era started to come back. I now have the 3 major festivals of the 60s/70s so I can escape the stresses of today for hours at any time.

My biggest gripe is that, having paid the price of the DVDs + Vat I then get stung by HM Customs for a further £14.

Given that I would recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys festivals and music. Janis Joplin and Otis Redding on the same lineup - awesome

This is a great DVD, capturing one of Hendrix's final performances.
It's a strange film, it looks like it was filmed in a tiny club - considering there were hundred's of thousands of people in the crowd!!
That said you do get a fantastic view of Hendrix in action and the performances of Red House and Machine Gun show his full command of the instrument, switching from rock and blues with ease.

Excellent stuff!

I like the original film, although it's not as good as it could be, but it's the only real documentary of THE guitarist. This remastered version would have been nice upgrade for the original, but fake wide screen (thank you again WB) spoils it totally. I have the original 4:3 and it is 1/3 "bigger" than this fake wide screen versio, which cuts the picture. It makes me really mad why they have to do things like this, because the picture quality otherwise is much better than in the original! Only reason I'm keeping this version is the bonus disc.

I was expecting this to be rubbish. But it was cheap. So I bought it.

It's uncritical and not a great place to start if you don't know much about Jimi Hendrix, (or aren't really that interested) but it's full of interviews from a lot of people who were around at the time (his childhood, older, being famous). This + Charles Cross Biography + the 2 Disc Jimi Hendrix - a life story + Classic Rock Albums - Electric Ladyland
and you've covered a lot of territory.

A much much better spend than "Jimi Hendrix - Videobiography"

Things you need to get the most out of this DVD:

1.Intermediate guitar playing skills - Danny Gill covers each note and repeats sections as if you were following a lesson, however a good basic knowledge of pentatonic scales, basic barre chords and some unusual chords like the `Hendrix' chord will help you progress quicker and not get so lost

2.A remote control for your DVD player - whilst each stage in shown and repeated you'll definitely be rewinding to replay certain bits (much to the annoyance of anyone else in the room!)

3.A guitar - tennis racket air guitar wont get you very far

4.A mirror and bandana - well lets face it, once you master this DVD its time to rock out even if your front room isn't quite the Isle of white!
