DVD : Shine A Light (2 Disc Collectors Edition with Bonus Digital Copy) [2006]

I managed to miss this in the cinema and waited a long time for it to turn up on DVD.
Its a great DVD, the sound is good quality, the video shots are superb the atmosphere is electric.
Its really nice the way Jagger comes across a bit tongue in cheek and the band don't seem to take it all too seriously.
The Stones aren't the best band ever but they have a long list of rock songs which deliver and have delivered constistently since 1960. Its all good fun.
Charlie Watts does a great job holding the rest of the band together, literally. And Jagger is still mesmeric to watch.
I saw them once in Croydon in the '60's with Brian Jones, only for the sound to be obliterated totally by screaming girls.
So it was nice ... Read More:

This really is what your BLU-RAY is ment to SHOW and what your AMPLIFIER is ment to SOUND like.

Crystal sound quality picks up every pinch of air left in these rockers lungs and let me tell you there is plenty of that.

The picture is pure quality showing everything so perfectly even down to the dry roasted pores in the creases of these leather faced rock gods!

The old tv footage and interviews is fantastic to watch and breaks up the concert giving you a little resting time between songs.

This film gives plenty of satisfaction!

Well it's been a long long time for this to see the light of day but it has to go down as the best music DVD ever produced. The Led Zeppelin legend is captured here in all it's glory with superb sound and images. Starting with black and white tv shows from 1969 all the way up to a stunning huge open air Knebworth extravaganza in 1979 with everything in between.
If you either saw the band live and want to re-live the experience or want to know why they are still idolised 40 years after their first get-together in Jimmy Page's River Thames houseboat then get this DVD-you will not regret it.

several tracks listed on the USA version have been left off this release e.g. all of Jeff Beck, some of Carlos Santana, some of John Mayer.

The layla performance - title 2 on dvd 2 - is inaccessible via regular menus - how stupid & annoying. If I buy a music DVd I don't expect to have to play childish hide n seek games with it to find the songs.

Buy the USA version.

First off as a DVD this is superb, the quality of picture and sound for something that was originally recorded in 1967 will blow you away, as will Jimi's unforgettable performance.
I've been a Hendrix music fan for a good while but I'd never actually seen him play a full set like you do on this DVD, I'd only ever seen brief clippings from documentaries etc before. Why?! Jimi at the Monterey is one of the best musical PERFORMANCES I've ever seen and anybody with even a passing interest in rock music (not just its history) should be forced to watch it, man if he played like that at every gig he played it's no wonder his rise to fame was so meteoric. Even now in 2008 I had to physically attach my lower jaw back to my face after watching the 'sacrifice', ... Read More:

As a fairly recent convert to Rory Gallagher I would say that this dvd is a pretty good place to start (I'm now in the process of buying all of his albums). I particularly like the blues sound of this performance. Why only 4 stars ? - well, because the editing just doesn't match the quality of the performance (Rory is amazing). Just too many shots of the bass when the action is actually going on with Rory. The acoustic items, however, are simply stunning. RIP Rory - see you all in Ballyshannon next year ?

More AFBF material - this time from British concerts

Anyone interested in Blues will have to buy this one. I wasn't aware that the 1964 show was recorded in the UK although I suspected it might have been when a Sonny Boy clip surfaced on YouTube. The cheering that greets Howlin Wolf is extremely heartwarming - he then proceeds to lay down Smokestack Lightnin - unavailable anywhere else on film as far as I know - and Don't Laugh at Me. Lightnin Hopkins is in there too while Sugar Pie Desanto does a couple of spirited performances

Also from 1964 (but not part of the AFBF series) are two songs apiece from Muddy Waters and Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the Blues and Gospel Caravan from a now-closed railway station in Manchester. Muddy's performances are ... Read More:

I love these boys and whilst they are strictly speaking no longer relevant in the 21st centuty, they do put on the best live shows that you will ever see.

Biggest Bang falls just short of the 5 star Four Flicks but in its own way it enables you to relive memorable gigs that you have been to.

If you've never seen the Stones then buy this DVD as an introduction to their stage craft and solid on-stge performance.

If you have seen the boys then this is the change to recapture that night at a venue somewhere in the world.

As the boys sang "It's Only Rock n Roll" and boy do we like it.
