Wow!....

Bought this 6 months ago and have just watched it for the third time. I have so much respect for Townshend & Daltrey for making this film - The interviews are incredibly candid.

No subject is off-limits to them - they happily talk about the music; the experiences on the road; late band members Keith Moon & John Entwistle; and their relationship with one another - from the very beginning to the present day.

True to form, while Townshend comes across as slightly aloof in his niche as the original tortured artist; Daltrey, by contrast, is almost painfully frank at times, and comes across as very likeable.

I am only 24 years old - I got into the Who after stumbling across a re-run of Quadrophenia ... Read More:

The Who during the 69-71 was a period where they could do nothing wrong onstage, performance after performance they kept providing dramatic, crazy, loud and energetic concerts... The Isle of Wight is one of them. I had owned both the VHS & Normal dvd of the Isle of wight performance and always found it lacking something compared to the bootlegs I had before. But after purchusing the 5.1 surround sound I decided to buy this version. Keith's drumming is louder and clearer due to the sound as is John's bass which causes the ground to rumble. Pete is on top form providing excellent solo's on Young Man blues, Heaven & Hell etc. Roger's singing is excellent especially during the 'Tommy' performance.

There's no faulting the power and musicianship behind the performance captured here, but it would have been really nice to get the full Tommy (as per the accompanying soundtrack CD) rather than edited highlights from it. I realise some directors/producers are under pressure to scale back the running time of concert films for the attention-deficit, but still... it would have been nice to see such a top-grade performance in its full glory.

On the plus side, it's nice to see the two bonus tracks missing from the original VHS added to the extras - Substitute and a cracking early version of Naked Eye. If you like the Who and/or classic rock, this is worth buying in spite of its faults. Just remember to take sea-sickness medication for some of the camera work.

There aren't many contenders for this dubious title, but I can't think of any other film that does a better job of conveying the appeal and depth of its subject. I saw it at the cinema when it was first released in 1979, and this version on DVD (somewhat expanded, extensively restored and cleaned up) brings back happy memories of the way it commemorated the band at the height of their powers (Keith Moon died while the film was being edited). There's an extraordinary collection of film from TV shows, interviews, amusing vignettes and concert performances, which all show the way the band was continually striving for new sounds, thinking about their significance and influence and worrying about the relationship with their followers and critics. The culmination is a brilliant ... Read More:

This particular installment of the brilliant "Classic Albums" series is an absolute must for fans of the Who and especially the amazing "Who's Next" album. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle are especially engaging interviewees, their reminiscences often funny, sometimes sad and always informative. They are more than ably backed up by Glyn Johns, the album producer, former manager Chris Stamp, biographer and fan Dave Marsh and Keith Altham, among others. The footage of the Who performing some of the songs live is priceless. What amazing power and energy those four guys had at their peak. Definitely one of the greatest rock bands on the planet, ever! Pete's solo performances are also superb, both in the footage from 1971 and in the recordings made especially for this documentary.

For Godssake reading some of the previous reviews mentioning words such as 'narcissist' and gracious enough to say things like 'suprisingly good'. May I ask 'who the hell do you think you are?' Have you ever got up on a stage and performed? Do you know what that is like? No doubt many of you who have written reviews here live sad existences in the UK and get a tad carried away with your own self importance (not) when the opportunity arises to offer an opinion. This concert created awareness hopefully and made some money for charity. Artists turned up and performed to a crowd that were not necessarily there to see them alone which is an anxiety forming thought to an artist. Some did well others did not. It was a test if anything of the skill to capture an audience which was not necessarily yours ... Read More:
