This series is far more than a tourist trap - particularly as guide Francesco da Mosto would rather there were less visitors to his city (to buy less fake glass/carnival masks/plastic gondolas/jester hats)! Francesco is charming, witty and wonderfully insouciant as he presents an informative yet dramatic history of Venice, La Serenissima. He acknowledges its past arrogance and mistakes, whilst laughing at some of the more bizarre traditions (even he isn't sure about the election of the doges), but all the while maintains an awed respect for the stunning architecture and art, engineering and endurance of his home; Francesco is proud to be Venetian, and I only wish I could share the honour.

Unlike most reviews for this thusfar I thought I'd wait to see the whole series. How can you really comment if you haven't? Before I start my review of the series I'd say that watching this on DVD is the way to go. This kind of adventure should seem epic and long, put it on and watch 3 episodes back to back. Not in a weekly form. I found Long Way Down much better on DVD than on TV due to this. Oh and one more thing, it's not as good as Ewan McGregor And Charley Boorman - Long Way Round [Special Edition] [2004], few shows are, so don't expect it to be. Wonderful imagery brings alive this amazing country,enough to make you want to visit and see it all for yourself !! Hope they see sense and release a soundtrack cd soon,the music alone is outstanding ! Sure it would be popular with China being the country of the moment !

I only bought this DVD after watching the first few episodes on NatGeo. I didn't plan on watching it after reading the bad reviews here. But I loved Long Way Round and knew I just had to watch these two guys again. The first big criticism abt this series must be Eve's (Ewan's wife) out-of-the-blue decision to join them. As a woman I was slightly embarrassed for her because she had never even ridden a motorcycle before! It didn't help that Ewan was gleeful of the prospect and I felt exactly what Charlie must have felt - oh gooooooood! It all seemed like too much of an indulgence on Ewan's side and Eve looked like a clueless and spoilt, bored housewife. However, what most reviewers did not say is that she only joined for a short section of the journey - thankfully on a realistically ... Read More:

This a great DVD for those wanting to see diverse parts of the Great British countryside. Nick Crane does an admirable job of retracing documented jouneys made during, generally, the pre-industrial age and he always finds time to sup some ale in a wayside inn. The William Cobbett programme is my favourite. He often refers to documents and in this case W.C.'s 'Rural Rides'. He starts the programme waving one Penguin Classic edition, then he clutches and older edition and then says goodbye brandishing his original copy. Also during the piece with the quad-biking shepherd the last 4 or 5 seconds end with them bothwalking backwards uphill followed by an arse-first sheepdog. Good stuff indeed.

Everyone seems to have missed the point in reviewing this programme! It is not meant as an advert to make you want to travel to certain countries. It is meant to educate you about the history of what it was like and what it's like now, and that isn't always good. I like the way Palin looks at the world in a sarcastic and alternative perspective. If you wanted to watch trashy holiday advertising BS, look elsewhere
