Yes, it's low budget. Yes, the sets wobble. Yes, the costumes are naff. But Blake's 7 has that certain 'something' that makes it special and something to be cherished. The first of the four seasons isn't the best, but it does have a freshness and harder edge that gradually diminished as the show went on. What makes this show so watchable are it's characters who are wonderfully brought to life by some excellent actors. The Blake's 7 universe is a very dark and pessimistic one, the total opposite of Star Trek, an Orwellian 1984 scenario in space with the heroic Blake and his crew bravely fighting against overwhelming odds. The first episode, The Way Back is one of the finest episodes of the entire series and one of the most adult too (Blake being convicted ... Read More:

Blake's 7 moves up a notch with the excellent second series which contains some superb and very dramatic episodes. The second half of the season contains a continuing theme which is the search for Star One abd the characters continue to develop, with Blake becoming more obsessive and driven, and Avon starting to play a more prominent role. Brain Croucher takes over the role of baddy Travis and is unfortunately the weak link in this series, being not a patch on Stephen Greif's menacing portrayal, but Jacqueline Pearce has much more to do as ice queen Servalan and is a joy to watch. The stand out episodes here are the drug-themed Shadow, Pressure Point in which a key character is killed, Trial and the season finale Star One, which is possibly the greatest episode of the ... The third season of Blake's 7 sees Paul Darrow's Avon take over as the main focus of the show, Gareth Thomas' Blake having left at the end of the previous season. Personally, I think this is the best of the show's four seasons, as the show had been a little narrow minded in it's scope. With Blake gone, there is less of a sense of purpose in the crew, and therefore a much greater variety in the types of stories with several very imaginative sci-fi stories, the most unusual being the rather weird Sarcophagus. Avon really comes into his own here, and Paul Darrow steals the show with his memorable performance. New characters Dayna and Tarrant are also very welcome and are played by some very capable actors, Jacqueline Pearce has a whale of a time in this season featuring more prominantly ... Read More:

Loved this, its maybe more of a share with friends than a keep and watch over and over.

Blakes 7 - This is truly funny and you need to watch it several times to really get McKenzie Crook as Servelan but its worth the effort, the humour is there people! Orac drinking beer and Jenna's little accident, hilarous! All done by the original Orac, sadly no longer with us, Peter Tuddenham. (B7 fans, get this disc for the behind the scenes recording session with Peter, its a must, must, must have fan clip, missing you already Peter!)

Ant Muzak - For me a bit of a miss but can see the humour of Adam and the Ants hitting a late night Supermarket.

World of Wrestling - If you remember Giant Haystacks or watching it on Challenge then this will tickle your funny bone. Full on ... Read More:

This is a very good, sharp video edition of the series, which I cannot praise enough. Tight plotting, wonderful performances from a ll the cast(brilliant casting), tough and gorgeous women, gorgeous men, complex characterisation and character development, wonderful drama.

Only four stars because you're better off getting the DVDs--the packaging and the quality of the cassettes is not very good. The individual tapes don't even list the episodes on them, their quality is frail. The cassettes have quite loose tapes--might get sucked in and snapped even in a good, new VCR. I just opened my boxset for Season Four and the picture wobbled, because of the looseness of the tape. If this happens to you, demand your money back, and for feck's sake, get the DVDs instead.

With series 3, Blake's 7 moved from being a very good series to an outstanding series. It's hard to say exactly why series 3 is better than series 2; I think a number of small factors add up. The weak actor who played Travis version 2 is gone; Gareth Thomas is gone; the stories are, on the whole, slightly better. The special effects are still low-budget BBC, but that doesn't matter so much as the scripts and the actors.
If you like SF at all: buy this series.

DVD : Blake's 7 - Season 4 [1978]
Series four of "Blakes seven" was to be the last we would see of the space hopping anti heroes who had held us gripped from 1978-81. The concept of "Blakes seven" is second only to creator Terry Nation`s other sci-fi innovation, The Daleks, which made the man quite prolific in creating memorable characters. Who can forget the coldly calculating Avon, the cowardly thief Vila or the swashbuckling yet smarmy Tarrant? There was nothing cosy about "Blakes seven" as anyone could get killed off at any time, which gave the programme a gritty, realistic feel.

This series is an improvement on the good, yet directionless, third series. The destruction of the "Liberator" at the end of that series called for the designers to come up with a new spaceship ("Scorpio"), and it looks like the cost of that set drained the ... Read More:

DVD : Blake's 7 - Hostage / Countdown - Episodes 21 And 22 [1978]
Hostage concerns Travis' abduction of Blakes cousin, who Blake just has to rescue. The attack on the Liberator at the start of the ep is perhaps the biggest battle ever shown on Blakes 7. The Space commander is however obviously too camp (badly cast) to get Blake. A lot of this ep looks dull due to the usual quarry location but despite that, the cast liven it up a bit. The plot has too many holes for my approval though.

Countdown is about a ticking bomb and Blake's attempt to save a planet. The ep also has two good subplots; One concerning Avons old lover Anna's brother and one concerning a Space Major who is alleged to know the where-abouts of Star One. A good script, with crisp direction.
