I received this product this morning (I was expecting to receive it in two days' time, so that's a good start!)

I haven't opened it as of yet, but this is just a 'first impression' description for those of you who are curious.

The collection comes in an A4-sized package, about the size of an A4 book, for example, which suprised me - I was expecting a regular-sized boxset - like most other boxsets - with about 8-10 individual 'sections', each containing a disc. I am wrong. It contains 10 discs featuring every episode from every series of Red Dwarf. As mentioned, I have yet to open the boxset, but from the size and shape of it, I can only assume that the discs are all layed flat and possibly 'overlapping' one another ... Read More:

This is an improvement on Series 7 for sure. A return to the original way of filming (in front of a studio audience) makes a huge difference. Chloe Annette is much more settled in her role and the return of Rimmer as a main character, and the original Holly also contributed to the vast improvement in this series. Red Dwarf has now been reconstructed by nanobots and the crew are basically back where they started. All Lister, Kochanski, Kryten and Cat have to do is explain it all to the newly resurected crew.

The original concept of the show - the last human being in the universe being stranded in outer space with a hologram, a creature evolved from his pet cat, a mechanoid and a senile compter - is lost and that's why I still don't ... Read More:

Without this programme I'd stab myself in the face and all my friends as well. Thanks to this programme they're all still alive. If that's not worth buying the DVD for I don't know what is!

I'm probably one of the biggest Red Dwarf fans in the world and I have to agree with many of the other reviewers and say that this is definitely the weakest series. I think what ruins if for me is the exit of Rimmer as one of the main crew members (although he does appear in most of the episodes). It'd got to a stage where everyone was so well established in their roles that any one of them leaving would have had the same effect.

Although she clearly tries hard, Chloe Annette seems a little uncomfortable playing Kochanski, there isn't the same banter with her as with Rimmer and, for me it doesn't quite work.

The series is still funny though, even if it isn't the best.

Now on Starbug, chasing Red Dwarf through space because "Lister can't remember where he parked it", this is certainly among the best series, if not the best. One of my favourite Red Dwarf one liners is in the episode "Legion" when they're trying to get Legion to come with them and Rimmer mentions that they've met 31 people, all of whom have been nutters. When Legion announces that they won't be leaving his ship until the day they die, Rimmer just looks and says "thirty-two". It's not the line itself, it's the way Chris Barrie delivers it, the look on his face and his tone of voice and timing are just wonderful. Then there's the "space core directives" throughout the series, which Kryten can't resist correcting Rimmer on even once.

In one of the documentries, ... Read More:

At long last, the BBC has seen fit to treat one of its very best with the respect it deserves. Plenty of extras, out-takes, documentries, the lot. Red Dwarf is definitely one of the best comadies ever. The concept of the series is hillarious in itself - Dave Lister (Craig Charles), the last man left in the universe, stranded 3 million years into deep space, accompanied by a hologram simulation of his dead bunk mate Arnold J Rimmer (Chris Barrie), who he hates with a passion, a creature who evolved from his cat (Danny John Jules) on a mining ship piloted by a senile computer, Holly (in this series, played by Norman Lovett).

The first couple of series were made on the cheap in Manchester with grey sets and not much in the way of special effects. The writers, apparently, ... Read More:

This series is worth seeing just for the look on Listers face when a genetically altered Kryten (altered into a human being) hands him a double polaroid of his newly acquired "re-charge socket" and asks "Is this normal?" I don't know what was actually on the photos, but Craig Charles looks genuinely stunned.

The series was going from strength to strength at this point. The writing was genius, the acting superb and the scrapes the characters got into were hilarious.

As with all the other Red Dwarf DVDs the extras are as brilliant as the series itself, good documentries, lots of smeg ups and Chris Barries impression of Kenneth Williams is brilliant.

This series had more funding than the first, and it does show. The cast are now established, it's as if the roles are now second nature to them. There's some absolute classic lines, the line in the episode "Kryten" when they realise that the crew they've gone to rescue have been actually been dead for several centuries and Lister turns to Rimmer and says "the blonde one's winking at you" still has me doubled over laughing today.

Red Dwarf is so original and simply can't be copied - the Americans have tried and failed miserably. What makes it is the cast, no-one else could have played any character, with any other actors it just doesn't work, they're so perfect in the roles. This series is sheer brilliance.

As with series 1, there are plenty of extras - smeg ups and documentries ... Read More:

Still going from strength to strength, this series is brilliant. Although not the best episode of the series, one of my favourite scenes is in Holoship when one of the holograms has come aboard and is feeding back to his ship and Lister is taking the smeg, in my opinion it's hilariuos. By far the best episode is Back to Reality, when we first meet Dwayne Dibbley (the cats alter-ego). Special guest star, Timothy Spall, as the technician is absolutely brilliant and, if you play the episode with the cast commentry on, you'll find out he's not actually a Brummie!). The episode is one of the best ever, absolute class.

As ever, the extras are superb and worth the DVD just for the documentries and smeg ups.

The first two series of Red Dwarf were absolutely brilliant, but I have to say, this is the series where it really began to pick up steam and hurtle to being one of the best comedies ever made. The introduction of Robert Llewllyn as Kryten was a stroke of genius by the writers. Hattie Hayridge takes over the reins as Holly and, although arguably not as good as the orginal Holly, is superb in the role. The set had been up-dated, as had Rimmers uniform (even if it did make him look like something out of Thunderbirds), the series is much more polished than the first two and had obviously had a severe budget boost.

Again, there's bucket loads of extras (why the BBC can't seem to treat any other comedy like this I really don't know). Again, a MUST HAVE DVD for anyone.
