I am convinced that this is the best police drama around and also one of the finest shows on TV. Period. Unfortunately it has now been relegated to an abscure time slot on E4. So treat yourself and buy the box sets. I have Seasons 1-4 so far and they are all worth the money. If you like your drama real then I doubt you will be disappointed. The characters all have their own personalities but they also have what we all have.....little foibles, secrets and flaws. And this makes them seem so much more real and helps you empathise with them. For me it's great stories that don't rely on special effects and multiple bad guys getting shot every episode. I cannot add anything to the exstatic reviews elsewhere for all these series. I have never seen better police drama than this. But what is it about Steven Bochco series' and Fox? Saint Elsewhere + especially Hill Street Blues collected incredible numbers of Emmies and were groundbreaking productions that changed tv drama forever. Where are they ? One series of St Elsewhere in 3 years, 2 series of Hill Street Blues in 7 years and that's it. NYPD Blue - another groundbreaking drama series again garnering barrel-loads of Emmies. So where are series 5-11 ? No one asks, no one tells us what's going on ? Is it Mr Bochco blocking their publication ? Is it a character ? The third series of NYPD blue saw the show become far more episodic in structure than the towering first season or the David Caruso episodes of the second season. There are a few episodes that don't start 'previously on NYPD Blue' in Arthur Fancy's manly voice, which means they are total stand alones, not part of a developing story arc. It's still a five star. Series one was probably a five plus, but no matter. The quality of the acting and the storytelling is breath-takingly brilliant, held together by a towering performance by Dennis Franz as Andy Sipowicz, the alcoholic cop with a real flair for the bon mot. I bought NYPD Blue on DVD despite having never seen a single episode. I love watching cop dramas like The Shield and wanted something else that I could enjoy on the same level. Although NYPD Blue looks pretty dated now, none of the action or drama is diluted and it recieved much acclaim from both sides of the Atlantic when it was first screened. Audiences were hooked by the gritty realism of cases worked by detectives of the 15th precinct. The show also delves into the main characters personal lives and we learn about Kellys marriage break up, Sipowicz's battle with alcoholism and Martinez's pain caused by his junky younger brother.
