I don't remember the TV series as a child, but I knew they existed and after having got back into the Narnia series around the time of the first movie I wanted to see what they were like.
The first impressions are that they are very faithful to the books- almost every aspect is just as you'd expect from the book. It obviously attracts criticism because of the age of it- the effects, costumes etc are very obviously outdated now, but despite this it holds up in general. Aslan is very well done- the main problem with him is the mouth movement, he's actually better done than I expected him to be! The talking animals are all blatantly people in animal costumes, but they are actually well done- obviously some are better than others though. I ... Read More:

Great film, enjoyed it despite initial misgivings about watching a 'kids film'. Not going to review it in depth since so many others already have on the DVD section.

The picture on the bluray disc is excellent throughout, which does mean that some of the more dodgy special effects are shown up - though fortunately not too often. For the most part the graphics are very good, Aslan in particular is impressive.

The sound offers 5.1 and uncompressed. I could not get the uncompressed sound to work initially, but all was ok after a play around, and the uncompressed sound is very good. Footsteps in snow never seemed so loud! The 5.1 sound is also good, but does lack the detail of the lossless format.

One issue was that if ... Read More:

Like "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Wizard of Oz" and "Harry Potter" series, "Narnia" creates its own fantasy universe with its own set of facts and realities. Narnia is a vast land of snow and glaciers, where a wide variety of magical and mythological creatures such as fauns, centaurs, cyclops, griffins, dwarves, rhinos, beavers, wolves and other kinds of beasts live in. No need to mention mighty Aslan and his archenemy Jadis, the wicked White Witch.

In this magical backdrop, "Narnia" tells the story of four siblings who get into this enchanted realm through a mysterious wardrobe while they are in a temporary stay in a country manor. But they have a big problem: Narnia has been under the dark spell of the White Witch who turned it into ... Read More:

This 1988 tv series was excellent, I was 10 at the time and really enjoyed the fantasy of it, especially Aslan the lion, Mr Tumnus (the nervous fawn), The White Witch (who always gave me the creeps!), the children Lucy,Susan,Peter and Edmond, and not forgetting The Professor.

I would recomend this to both children and Adults alike. It may not be up to the special effects of todays films, ie:- Harry Potter or the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, but I still like it.

Good family film. Acting, actions scenes, special effects and characters are all very well done. Might be considered scarey for younger children in places (my 3yo has never had a problem) but never gory. No real hint of any religious message which wouldn't bother me either way really.
This has remained watchable even after a fair few viewings.

DVD : The Chronicles Of Narnia 'Book 2' - The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe [1988]
I watched this BBC version of the Narnia tale as a child and with my own children. I have also seen the 2005 film version and without doubt and with the exception of the ubiquitous computer graphics in the film version, the BBC version wins on all counts. The characters are perfect, the children, the animals, the witch and even Father Christmas. This version of Narnia feels real despite the dodgy BBC sets of the 1980’s and the players put real feel feeling and in the case of the White Witch, scariness, into the roles. Well done and what a pity a modern version, with all the resources now available, could not do better.

I have just finished watching the 2nd BBC Narnia DVD with my son (9) and he loved this as much as the Lion & Witch. The few cartoon overlays in DawnTreader are far less annoying than in the earlier serial. Anyway the makeup for the Narnian animals is so superb throughout the Chronicles of Narnia, and all the sets are so well made, imaginative and varied, that's really a minor quibble. The cast and children are excellent throughout - nasty cousin 'Eustace' shines in this series, and young Prince Caspian is a very dashing lead. Eustace and Prince Caspian return in the final BBC Narnia adaption 'The Silver Chair'. DVD picture quality, sound and the special effects are quite good on this DVD, although the picture colour is a little light, common with 35mm film transfers. ... Read More:

In the December, C.S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" will follow in the footsteps of Lewis' pal Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings Trilogy," with a gleaming new big-screen adaptation, full of top-notch CGI, costumes and settings.

In the months before it's released, however, it might be time to dust off the 1990 BBC adaptation of "The Silver Chair," one of several sequels to that first book of Lewis's. Despite some goofy prosthetics and more hammy witches, this is easily the best of the three movies, with excellent acting, pacing, and even some decent special effects.

The story opens at a trendy school that Eustace Scrubb attends. But a garden shed doorway leads Eustace and his bullied schoolmate Jill to Aslan's ... Read More:
