Though it's nice to have the entire Blackadder collection in one neat DVD-set, there's no comparison between Season One (1983) and the subsequent three seasons.

The 1983 series was directed by Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder) and Richard Curtis. Though Brian Blessed is a superb actor, the dialogue is mildly amusing at best. It simply can't hold a candle to the 1985, 1987 and 1989 seasons - all directed by Richard Curtis and Ben Elton. Season 2 is set in the first Elizabethan Era (late 16th century). Miranda Richardson is hilarious as Queen Elizabeth and it also features a young(ish) Stephen Fry as Lord Melchett. Season 3 is probably my favourite; it's set in the Regency period (early 19th century) where Hugh Laurie excels as Prince George. ... Read More:

Blackadder has always been one of the funniest and best written British Sitcoms around and this forth and last series is one of the best from the shows run. The six episodes of the series all show-off the great script and the brilliant performances by both the main cast and the guest stars. All the cast seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves throughout the series but alongside Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson, my favourite has to be Stephen Fry for his brilliant portrayal of General Melchett.

Each episode never ceases to be funny and the last episode of the series is still surprisingly touching despite the number of times that I have watched it. The one slight problem with the series is the laughter track that can be somewhat intrusive ... Read More:

On first watching `Blackadder II' I found it a big disappointment as I was a big fan of `The Black Adder'. That the episodes were virtually entombed in sitcom set's lost some of the depth of the first series which was mainly shot on location on film. Also that the stories were more traditional sitcom farce and underplayed the historical significance of some of the characters seemed a wasted opportunity. The shift from Medieval to Elizabethan England was possibly a bigger jar but the transition was harmonised by the Shakespeare connections.

Subsequent re-watching bears out this shift from the original series but it makes up for these shortcomings by a sharper script and by making Edmund the dominant character with Baldrick as a hapless assistant The shaper ... Read More:

After the disappointment I had suffered on watching `Blackadder II' after `The Black Adder' I wasn't particularly looking forward to watching `Blackadder the Third'. It arrived perfectly formed as the best sitcom I'd ever seen. The shift to Regency England seemed to suit the Production Design of BBC sitcoms and the writing team of Richard Curtis and Ben Elton where firing on all cylinders.

The cast also came into there own, where Blackadder II relied on hackneyed and previously mined comedy of the `Virgin' Queen and her court the residence of the somewhat stupid George, Prince Regent, brought to life by Hugh Laurie worked well as foil to Blackadder without the fret of execution which limited the wit of his ancestor.

The historical references also ... Read More:

It's a well known fact that this series is very different from the other Blackadders, but that doesn't mean its's not funny.
The action takes place in the middle ages where a sly/dim Blackadder wishes to become King with the help of a Baldrick (who is smarter than Blackadder) and Lord Percy (who is similar to how he is in series 2).
Blackadder gets into many funny situations, such as accidently killing the King, being trailed for wicthcraft, getting out of marrying an ugly princess and getting lock up with a madman played by Rick Mayall.
The series was also mainly filmed on location and looks brilliant. A lot of the comedy is physical and daft.
Rowan Atkinson gives a great performance, as does the rest of the cast including Brain Blessed as the King. Jim Broadbent ... Read More:

One of the funniest specials ever made, but because of some unfortunate editing of this DVD issue you never find out just why the workhouse orphans are so looking forward to Easter...

Blackadder is definitely one of the funniest comedies i've ever seen. No matter how many times you watch one episode there's got to be some gag that'll make you laugh out loud. The Georgian series is the best, and the Elizabethan series is the worst, though it's still very very very very good. A reasonably priced DVD too. Spend a little money and be rewarded with hours of entertainment.

It was great to see the Blackadder cast together again, 10 years after the show finished on such a high. It's just a shame that the latest episode 'BAck and Forth' is such a let down.
The whole plot is too far fetched even for Blackadder and sees our favourites Blackadder and Baldrick time travelling.
There are some good bits which are thinly spread across the half hour episode and even they aren't that funny.
I thought the whole cast and crew tried too hard to make it funny. It was over produced. And where was lord Percy?
This episode is only worth watching because it is a blackadder, without that title, no-one would care.
The best reason to buy the DVD is the comic releif special, which reminds us how good the show really was. The special is about the execution of ... Read More:

The authors Richard Curtis and Ben Elton are well known to BBC audiences for their comedic masterwork, having been severally and individually part of the Vicar of Dibley, Mr. Bean, The Young Ones, The Man from Auntie. Rowan Atkinson, the lead actor in this series, also collaborated as writer and actor in other features such as Mr. Bean and the Thin Blue Line. John Lloyd was the producer who helped bring this series to life.

The Blackadder series, begun in the 1980s, was a comedic masterpiece set forth by Rowan Atkinson and his comrades. From start to finish, the first series was a masterstroke of wit, irony and comedic styling that fits both the contemporary and medieval situations perfectly. The combination of slapstick and intellectual humour blended well, and the literary types will not miss the ... Read More:
