I first watched this when it aired in 1994. It was the first episode of Cracker I watched and I thought it was fantastic. I was only 20. Add the best part of 15 years and I've finally watched it again... So now what do I make of it?

I'm surprised I didn't come back to this sooner. Coltrane is perfect as Fitz. Many have tried to play the angry, hard-drinking detective but nobody comes within a country mile of this acid-tongued colossus. He is hilarious at times, genius, tragic and brutal at others. Add to that, the utterly convincing performance of Robert Carlyle as psychotic skin headed killer, Albie Kinsella; the beautiful and poignant writing of Jimmy McGovern; and a rock-solid supporting cast (including a great Christopher Eccleston, ... This could have been such a good programme but the screaming high pitch noises that make up the soundtrack are appalling - I should think anyone with a dog would have problems. The sound engineer must have spent a life at `rages' and listening to heavy metal music because the over-bearing an screeching sounds hurt the ears and totally distract from the story. I am very annoyed about it as this `Cracker', whilst not having the level of story line and characters of earlier episodes, could have been really good. Unfortunately, it has been cheapened by the soundtrack.

This is one of my favourite episodes of Cracker but also the one that creeps me out the most!

Cracker becomes involved in the case of a missing girl, Joanne, who was very involved with a local religious sect and was also having an affair with the Minister (a particularly unsavoury character!)

The minister's wife, Virginia has found out about the affair and possible pregnancy and because the Minister suddenly decides the repent, there is the question of what to do with Joanne!

Add in involvement from the Minister's brother and his wife, arson at a factory and some pretty intricate body art and you've got the usual high standard of drama you'd expect.

As usual Fitz's life is a mess, and this time Judith ... Read More:

This is perhaps one of the most moving and saddening, yet disturbing 'Cracker' episodes. It follows the rage-fuelled lives of a young man, Bill Nash and his older boss, Stuart Grady, who embark on a semi-crime spree. The relationship between the two men is never fully revealed, but the viewer is left believing that it is a homosexual one. Both of these actors are convincing, their performances affecting.

McGovern takes his usual insightful look at ordinary people and the human condition, sensitively showing the viewer the phenomenon known as 'Folieadeux', which is the meeting of two individuals who, when in a relationship, can often resort to acts of intense violence or crime. This begins with the murdering of the older of the two's landlord, ... Read More:
