I wish to buy the complete collection but am not sure which one to buy. Besides the difference in quality as ppl have pointed out, I also notice the cast to be different. The 2008 version casts Jeremy Brett as holmes, does it have Edward Hardwick/David Burke as Watson? Please comment and I'll place my order. Thank you - Ravi

What can i say about this fabulous box set. This is a must have for any fan of Sherlock Holmes. This is a masterpeice TV Series. Superbly acted by all, David Burke and Edward Hardwicke are wonderful. (I wanna hug them both!!) Jeremy Brett is simply just outstanding. He IS Sherlock Holmes. he will take you into the very mind of the character. His acting is a masterclass performance. He really should have won a BAFTA for his role. It is a bittersweet thing to watch though to see the decline in his health on screen, but dont let that put you off, he is simply spellbinding. A well presented DVD boxset that is a fitting tribute to one of Britain's much loved actors and sadly missed today. Gone, but NEVER forgotten. If you want to buy a new DVD, buy this ... Read More:

As time went on with Granada's productions of Sherlock Holmes, two things happened. First of all was that as the original creative team left for pastures new, the scripts were subject to more and more padding out, sometimes out of neccessity (The Dying Detective being a prime example), sometimes to create a different feel, with mixed success. The Casebook is mainly loyal to the canon in it's dramatisations, but The Memoirs does feature an awful lot of window dressing (The Three Gables being a case in point).

The second was Jeremy Brett. The further you get into these collections you can see just how unwell he was becoming. Indeed he died not long after the completion of the series, and was so unwell during the filming, Charles Gray as Holmes's ... Read More:

If you're only familiar with these episodes from catching repeats on ITV3 or (a few years back) Granada Plus, you're in for a treat. It turns out the versions in syndication have several cuts in them, whereas the ones on these DVDs are complete and unexpurgated. I didn't realise episodes like The Resident Patient and The Red-Headed League have entire scenes missing when you watch them on TV; it's been wonderful to discover the full-length versions here.

DVD : The Sherlock Holmes Catalogue - The Hound Of The Baskervilles [1988]
While budgetry problems due to an overspend on the Return story Silver Blaze make this look a bit cheap in places (notably Watson and Baskerville pursuing the figure on the moor), this is an excellent and faithfull retelling of the original story for the screen. Brett is at his height as the sleuth, and this film really does give Watson the chance to stretch his legs and for Edward Hardwicke to expand his role as the capable actor he is. Solid performances all the way round for the guest stars, and despite some scenes short on budget, the whole thing looks fantastic.

The Hound itself when seen could be said to be slightly less than chilling, but is the superior on eof all the productions I have seen, and the sound and reaction of the actors, is what makes ... Read More:

DVD : The Sherlock Holmes Catalogue - The Illustrious Client / The Creeping Man [1991]
The Illustrious Client is one of the most shocking Holmes stories and I remember when I first read it the feeling of horror as Watson describes what has occurred. I doubted that television could provide the same sensation. However, Granada have produced a wonderful version of this story, with Anthony Valentine giving an excellent, understated performance as the villain, Baron Gruner. Edward Hardwicke is brilliant as Watson, having to deal with the threat to Holmes's life (without giving too much away) and his friend's insistence that he become an expert in Chinese pottery in 24 hours (don't ask!). This is a beautifully shot, atmospheric piece and the use of Don Giovanni as a background score was particularly inspired, especially at the end. Perfect for dreary winter evenings.
