For anyone who hasn't watched the royal family the concept of sitting watching a family who are sitting watching tv may seem very non-comical... however i guarantee you will love it!

The casting is genius - led by Jim in his crusty jeans.
The writing is amazing - only this show can make you laugh one minute then be near to tears the next. (watch the queen of sheeba edition - you'll see what i mean)

Buy this - you wont be disappointed.

Enjoy

The Royle Family has got all the elements needed for a good comedy. There's a busy do-it-all (Barbara), a lazy, hypocritical slouch (Jim), a mother that would avoid her baby at all costs (Denise), a dim-witted, loving father (Dave), a work-aholic (Anthony) and an annoying, yet lovable, grandmother (Norma).

The ability to relate to nearly every character is what makes this sitcom so popular. The absence of the audience laughter track is a welcome change, as it makes you feel as if you're there eavesdropping on them. The way Jim laughs at his own jokes and Anthony always sighs before doing something makes you feel like their your family.

Superb acting by all actors plus uncheap jokes, equals The Royle Family. If you ... Read More:

When I heard that a one off special of one of the greatest TV comedies was being produced, I couldn't wait. So - when I finally got to see it, I was unfortunately left disappointed. For me, the writing is nowhere near the same standard as the previous three series. The lack of 'real time' in the episode makes it seem like a different show. Jim Royle has gone from being the miserable sod with a heart of gold to a downright nasty person. His treatment of Dave and Anthony in this show left an unpleasant taste in my mouth. Touching when Nana passed away but overall short on quality laughs, certainly not up to the standard of series 1,2 and 3.
A shame.

I absoloutly love this comedy. I can't believe you are actually sitting at home watching someone on TV sitting at home watching their TV! At first I thought "A family watching TV! How boring!" but how wrong was I? It just goes to show that you really never should judge a book by its cover. I loved this and own all 3 series and was estatic when I leared Caroline is writing a Christmas Special. The best thing about this is that everyone knows a family like the Royles. I screamed with laughter over Denises "Mam - tell him!" because thats all my sister and I used to say to our mum when our dad wound us up!

I love the fact that the Royle's reperesent a normal family, OK so they're scruffy, lazy and some of their habits are filthy but the dialogue, ... Read More:

This one almost slipped under the radar here in America, only being shown on BBC America for about six months. I never missed an episode. One of my favorites, I had to by all three. It is hard to imagine that Caroline and Craig (Denise and Dave)wrote the shows as their characters are so simple, dim witted and played so well, it must be their real personalities. Jim, Barb, and Antony are no less fantastic at making you feel that these actors are just who they portray.
As my review title implies, the Royles could represent millions of middle class working Americans who's days revolve around work and comming home to gather at the tv to eat, smoke (which is not seen on American tv), and make small talk. The Royles are a family you can live with.

I own both series' 1 and 2 on video and I have to say that series 2 is funnier. The presence of Ricky Tomlinson makes this programme funnier than it would be without him. When he finds out that Norma is going to stay for another week, his reaction makes it the best moment in the history of the show, starting with his initial reaction "Over my dead body..." simply brilliant.
