This excellent series provides a logical, clear, step by step guide to various major engagements of WWII. Broken down into stages such as; prelude, planning, weapons, armies, battle etc, the engagement is explained in comprehensive and easily intelligible detail. It is never over technical or textbook like and I found it absorbing. Tim Piggot Smith's totally professional narration enhances the overall experience. This is one of the best documentaries of its' kind (and I've seen a lot) and is suitable for beginner or history buff. Thoroughly recommended.

DVD : Battlefield Britain : The Complete BBC Series
Battlefield Britain uses some great computer graphics to show the details of the battles, and especially enjoyable is when Peter Snow pulls out his computerised map to show the geography of the battlefields and the army positions. Also a nice touch is creating a computerised physiognomy of the main commanders of the battles, letting us see what theses commanders might have looked liked, being that there were never any pictures of most of them. Also having the computer character images then turn to each other to face off increased the excitement for the audience. Let the battle begin!

Always great narration from the Snows

Also enjoyed how the Snows would walk around contemporary Britain where the battles once took place and show ... Read More:

I agree with the way they divided these. Start with Series I. Those are the very best and the most important episodes. It is the one to have if you only buy one set. However, Series 2 is excellent also. I recommend it wholeheartedly. If they release a series 3, I am sure I will buy it. Meanwhile I probably will begin collecting the single episodes available on Amazon.co.uk.

I have been hoping for years this would come out on DVD. It ran on PBS in the USA, and I call it one of the two best WWII documentaries ever made (the other is The World At War). It is not available in the USA. However, these region 2 PAL DVDs play great on a PC. If you don't want to be prompted about switching regions, view on a Linux computer with Xine. However, I am happy to report ... Read More:

I think the "Battlefield" series about World War II and now Vietnam are among the most informative documentaries about those wars available. They concentrate on the hard strategic facts of the wars as seen by the commanders and political leaders at the top. I think the latest series about Vietnam is a fitting continuation of the various series about the Second World War and is generally of as good quality.

A good friend of mine who was active in the anti-Vietnam War movement in the United States watched the series with me and he said that it showed that many of the beliefs he and others who opposed the war were hollow myths. Primary among them was the idea that the war in Vietnam was a popular, people's uprising by an indigenous movement of South Vietnamese ... Read More:

Few battles have been more forgotten than this one. The Soviet liberation of Manchuria should have gone down in history as probably the most successful offensive of WW2. The Red Army with 1.6 million men with massive air and artillery support took on 1 million men of an army that was just possibly the most fanatical since the Spartans and decimated them in around 10 days. An area the size of Western Europe was occupied including much marshland and mountainous terrain. The Japanese lost nearly 700,000 men killed or captured, the Soviets took only 30,000 casualties including 8000 fatalities. Sadly this mind boggling achievement has almost completely fallen into obscurity, shrouded as it is by the first and only use of atomic bombs.

opinion hardly mentioned Cassino at all.
Most disappointing.
