This is an ok documentry but fails on a number of points. The documentry fails to expose the full extent of foriegn citizens participation in the Waffen SS. These are only briefly mentioned and little attempt except for that they were "extreme right wing" (only true for a number of the foriegn volunteers) to explain why they join up is made. No mention is made of the Swedish SS soldiers and hardly any mention of SS Wiking.. Furthermore, it gets hung up on atrocities and the SS reputation as an Elite fighting force.. A finnish veteran of the winter war assigned to the Waffen SS expressed his disdain at the ineptness of the Waffen SS during operation barberosa.. Quite why you would want to watch this documentary more than once is beyond me. It and other episdoes from the series are regulary shown on the freeview digital channel UK History (several times a month!). The documentary is fairly humdrum, being mostly a collage of black and white footage and photos. Robert Powell (Actor from Jesus Christ Superstar the movie) gives a clear though uninspiring narration when reeling off the script. The odd interview with eyewitnesses offers the only interesting insight into the subject. This is 2nd rate low budget TV designed as a time filler for the TV schedule.
