DVD : Oliver! (Special Edition) [1968]
Simply put, Oliver! is one of the greatest musicals of all time. It is filled with memorable songs - "Food Glorious Food", "Oliver!", "Consider Yourself" and "Oom-Pah-Pah" to name just a few - and equally memorable characters.

The film is a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel and much like the story of Oliver Twist itself, it is a perfect family film. There are some frightening moments - the villain Bill Sykes played by Oliver Reed is scary enough on his own - but overall, the film will appeal to children of all ages as well as adults.

The story - which almost everyone is surely familiar with by now - revolves around a little orphan boy named Oliver and his life growing up in London. At first he lives in the ... Read More:

The Sound Of Music (2 Disc 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition) [1965]
With nearly three hours of snow-capped Swiss mountains, a sprawling family of six children, extravagant parties, picnics and family concerts in Salzburg and buckets of encouragement from Rogers and Hammerstein, it's no wonder that this film is also called THE SOUND OF MONEY. It won FIVE ACADEMY AWARDS and has taken hundreds of millions dollars. It's the surprisingly simple story of Maria(JULIE ANDREWS), a nun who's Governess to the rigidly disciplined children of an Austrian Military Captain(CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER). She so enchants him that he breaks off his engagement to a socialite baroness. In the meantime, Maria, teaches the children to sing and the whole family is soon giving ... Read More:

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [1968] 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is my second favourite after 'The Wizard Of Oz'. 'Chitty' stars Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries, James Robertson Justice and Robert Helpmann. Though this release onto DVD is the Full Screen version of this film i personally prefere it due to the fact this is a wonderful transfere to Disc, with it's lovely deep colours and so beautifully restored it looks like a modern film. Dick Van Dyke is superb as the children's father who rescues a vintage racing car from a junk yard and gets the car working again. He decides the car should be called 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' and he tells his children a story of how the car is magic and able to float and fly. Everything is so wonderful about this ... The title says it all, I think and the reviewer who considers it classist and misogynist has obviously failed to see the point of the movie which actually makes fun of these attitudes. Remember the scene at Mrs. Higgin's house or Alfred P. Doolite's remarks on 'middle-class morality' - hardly narrow-minded.

Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that you either love or hate. Watching it again over 20 years after its first release, it was funny this time around to register a social and cultural subtext and to recognise what a macho thug Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) really was: after he has beaten up the preppy waiter Robbie Gould, Baby doesn't seem worried at all that he might one day turn his fist on her; in fact she cuddles him tenderly! Baby (Jennifer Grey) was more sexually assertive than I had remembered: it is she and not Johnny who initiates the movement of their relationship onto the next level by laying her romantic feelings bare. Their growing intimacy might have been socially unusual - an unworldly daughter with political ideals from a wealthy, privileged family and ... Read More:

I'm bemused by the tendency to assert that this film is a veiled Vietnam film, "ostensibly" about another war, as this Amazon review puts it. It IS about another war, one that was far more important to the nation where it was written and filmed, and in which the father of writer and director Charles Chilton was killed. Anyway, I watched it as a First World War film, and that is how it has always seemed to me: it comments on all other wars, implicitly, of course.

It's silly to compare or measure this against most other war films, because it is so unlike any other, but it stands out as a dramatic, cinematic, narrative gem. A serious musical about the horrors of war: sounds as likely as a serious musical about living in Nazi Germany. Oh, wait...someone did that too. ... Read More:
