This entire film is shot with 'Wobbly-hand-cam' which I am NOT a fan of.
To be honest, it's more like 'Steady-hand-cam' and reasonably subtle, so rather than making me feel ill, it just kept reminding me of the presence of a cameraman. This slightly hindered my immersion into the film; it made me want to shout "Can you just keep STILL?!".

I thought this was especially odd as the rest of the visuals were, IMHO, bee-yootiful.

Although this fits the Horror genre because of the subject matter, it's not hardcore horror. The supernatural theme is enhanced by a touching story of growing-up and remembering childhood (emotions). All set in a stunning location in rural Japan.

Horror events were more creepy ... Read More:

Ring is a classic horror film that has influenced many horror films, east and west, since. It also stars Hiroyuki Sanada, an excellent actor who you can see in Last Samurai and Sunshine. For this reason alone you should buy it. I'm not going to review the film because no doubt you've already gathered that it's essential. Instead I'll tell you about the disc. The features are not worth talking about so let's skip that. The picture and sound quality is very poor. Honestly the picture is ridiculouse and just lazy. One of Japans highest grossing films surely deserves better than this. The sound, despite what the box says is not 5.1 and a bit unrefined. These are unfortunate issues with this release but I still think it's worth buying. It's worth ... Read More:

The current wave of Hollywood horror movies seems to produe very few, if any, truly horrific pieces of cinema. To find examples of these I have looked to the Japanese horror market and discovered a number of absolute gems. Audition begins as a beautiful romantic drama, engaging the viewer with four or five complex, intriguing characters and the interesting premise of a writer holding a fake audition for a new wife. At this point I would suggest anyone who has not seen the film to stop reading this review now and go watch the movie. It would be best viewed cold knowing no more than i have told you here, for after the calm but captivating beginning Miike plunges us into hell. After this turn the film contains some of the most arresting and scary moments in cinema ... Read More:

If taking a rather dull Japanese classic and changing certain aspects, such as removing all the boredom, and replacing it with some bloody character development, then using the increased budget to improving things like the videotape instead of rubbish special effects (don't worry, I'll get onto Ring Two in a minute), and yet staying so true to the original is somehow boring, then call me John Smith in Grey. beige, beige, beige. I'm eating celery cooked in peas as we speak. Actually, it's not cooked since that activity is too entertaining for my tiny little mind.

The Ring is not at all boring. I was completely caught off guard, as I was not expecting a psychological chiller when I entered the cinema, and the trailer had been very vague. Even my git of ... Read More:

A Tale Of Two Sisters has more in common with David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" or perhaps even "INLAND EMPIRE" than with J-Horror classics like "Ring" or "The Grudge". It's non-linear, dreamlike and ultimately more moving than frightening (although it has a few moments). Not surprising that the crude marketing has backfired a little then (see the negative reviews on this site for any recent Lynch film and they are amazingly similar - "worst film I've ever seen blah blah blah").
It's a shame that some people hate being baffled so much by a film, but I can't help thinking that with this one their mounting irritation has blinded them to an absolute gem. Everything works in A Tale Of Two Sisters. The acting, cinematography, use of setting, use of music and sound are superb, ... Read More:

I first watched the original ring, not really knowing what it was. I just recognized the Japanese language and thought 'Hey a Japanese mystery or something.'. This was a little before Synopsis with the 'i' button on Sky Digital, so I had no way of figuring out what Ring was all about.

This for me, made the whole experience bucket loads more terrifying. I could barely watch at times. The psychological fear the director and cast sew is ultimately superior to the 'oogie boogie coming to getchya and stab/strangle/hook you' of floundering western horror. Sadly the idiots who remade this classic failed to notice that. They also messed up the subplot and pre-narrative timeline by moving it to america, but that's a rant for another time.

Ring 2 is a little tricky ... Read More:

I like the premise of the film but in some ways it feels a little misleading. The murdered victims seem in some ways a little beside the point, incidental rather than central to the story. I would describe the film as ghost story rather than horror film, there is a difference! The result is that the most interesting elements of the story are the psychological implication of Chihiro's multiple personalities and how they came into being, and ultimately the central character's own demons that she fights to surpress. I liked the setting amidst the ruins of the earthquake and an abandoned derelict hospital is always going to be atmospheric and disturbing. The characters also were sympathetic (mostly) and I did find myself routing for them. But what stops this film being scary is that although ... Read More:

Basic plot line but very well made, well acted and a good twist at the end. Nothing particularly original but if you're a fan of Asian horror, or just getting into the genre this is worth a watch.

There was a time, in the 80's-early 90's when Godzilla films were always on TV. I taped a few at the time, cus I was a huge Godzilla fan. Where has he gone since?
I have realised that I haven't even seen half of the films they have made - 28. 'Godzilla' 98, 'Godzilla' original and 'King Kong vs Godzilla' are available, but I'm desperately waiting for them to release the lot. When?
People want them! Hurry Up! Why does America get everything?

I saw this film when it was on TV a few years ago, loved it's absurdness and all out ridiculas style. I would describe it as a B movie with an art house feel... Very strange. When I've sold enough cattle at the market I will by this DVD. :-)
